Self revs and engine malfuction warning

Hi my ford focus zetec 2008 petrol will occasionaly self rev when parked in neutral the engine malfuction warning comes up when this happens the revs also sit umder 1000rpm when stationary does anyone know what the cause could be and any recommendations on what i could do to solve this my self without having to go to a garage if possible?
