Ford Focus Tyre Pressure Sensors

Featured Replies

Hello All

My daughter has had a Ford Focus Hatchback on 2014 plate for the last 9 years

She had used it for about 2 years and had the first issue with a tyre pressure sensor

The Tyre and Exhaust guy mentioned that this was a regular problem with the Ford Focus model, which at the time i wasn't too concerned about

However, 23 changes since, I'm getting a little frustrated, to put it politely,  this includes having an ABS sensor replaced a couple of times as well

During the recent occurrence, I asked the Tyre and Exhaust guys what was the actual average length of time that a Sensor should last. ?  He said 7 years approximately, dependent upon driving conditions

I have tried to log an issue with Ford in order to get their opinion, and after replying and answering 24 of their general questions, they've just closed the case without giving any kind of constructive answer

Did initially have thoughts on going back to having just normal tyre valves, but it seems that its a legal requirement to have these sensors on cars dated 2014 and onwards

Just wondering what the general thoughts are on this, and curious to know if any other drivers have had similar issues

All the best everyone

The tyre fitter is correct, they are usually good for about five years or so.

Just got a set for our 2015 Focus and will be having them fitted soon at the same time as we have a new set of tyres fitted. But if your daughters tyres are ok you can have a new set of valves fitted at any time.

The ABS sensors aren't part of the TPMS system on the later models, so those are a separate issue.

I might have expected 2 sets of TPMS sensors to have been fitted in 10 years.  But it sounds like you've had more than double that.  Are the sensors genuine or are they aftermarket?  Are they being broken during tyre changes or just randomly while driving?  Does it have low profile tyres on 18" wheels?  Does the car get bashed up & down kerbs frequently?

A very odd statement to make. All cars of any make or model fitted with TPMS battery powered sensors (which is probably all of them) need new sensors fitted typically between 7 and 10 years. You get the odd sensor that fails a little earlier and likewise an odd one that lasts a little longer.

How you have managed to need 23 replacements is a mystery unless they are eBay specials

For information purposes, my daughter has had the Sensors installed at Mr Tyre, Eden Tyres and T C Harrison Ford main dealership

They are not low profile tyres and from what I have observed she is a competent driver

Ok, thanks.  The independent garages may not be fitting genuine sensors, but the Ford dealer will have done.

So far I can't see any other reason for them to keep breaking.  I haven't heard of another Focus going through that many sensors.
