Sounds like a faulty toot fuse. 😂

Any intermittent issues like this is usually caused by loose wiring, or corrosion at connectors. Have a look at the horn itself, it's very exposed at front of car, and maybe need something as simple as a squirt of WD40 to revive connections.

I don't disagree with any of the above answers.

My poor contact was at the steering wheel end though.

I hardly ever use my horn (I'm a very calm driver!) but once when I needed to, it just didn't work at all. Great, I thought, that's an MOT failure. So I got home and tried pressing the horn pad slowly, then quickly, then hard, then soft, then long, then at different angles (I think there's a Carry On script there)... It started working intermittently and after a couple of minutes  i could get it to work every time. So I tried to remember to use it occasionally on a country  road - use it or lose it.

I had exactly the same issue as Alan on a Mk3 Focus.  The horn would stop working if I didn't use it for a few weeks.  But after a few presses it would start to work again.

Never a problem on Greek cars 🤣

It will be connections on the horns they get corroded at front of the car.
