Mot failure

Featured Replies

Hi all.

Wasn't sure if this was a general thread or vehicle specific.

My 59 plate fiesta has litterally just failed its mot.

the failure reads as follows.

repair immediately (major defects) suspension component mounting perscribed area exessively corroded significantly reducing structual strenth offside rear (sill)

does anyone have any idea what would be involved in rectifying this and approxamtely how much it would cost. I would be looking to get the same thing done on the passanger side at the same time, as it's an advisory. Last year the drivers side was an advisory, so will need doing in 12 months time.

Aditionally. The expiry of the mot that was on the car is on the 19th October. So this is a question I think that most people will have a diffrent take on but hopefully someone will have a definitive answer. Given the expiry date is on the 19th of october (still technically valid) and it's just failed it's mot, does the failure effectively void the remaining time on the existant mot? Can I still drive the car on the road untill the expiry?

That failure doesn't make much sense.  I think they've ticked the wrong box on the MOT system.  The suspension is not mounted anywhere near the sill.  However, assuming it is the sill that's rotten (which it usually is) the rotten part needs to be cut out, a new part needs to be formed by cutting and bending to the contours, then it needs to be welded in.  The weld needs to be ground back.  A small amount of body filler applied, then at least a base coat of paint to prevent the new part rusting.  Ideally also a top coat to colour match to the car but that's not an immediate necessity.  Parts are cheap but it takes a lot of skill and time to do this job.  I'd be estimating £300-£500 for both sides partly depending on whether you have the paint colour matched or not.

You are allowed to continue driving the car until Oct 19th from an MOT point of view.  However, the insurance can be void if the car is deemed unroadworthy.

(PS - This is definitely a vehicle specific thread.)

That's exactly what mine failed on last year, with one sill costing me £200 to sort (with a 'base' paint coat just to protect). However, I realise that I don't live in a huge urban area where labour rates are much higher than what I often can get. In NI, an MOT failure supersedes the MOT expiry date, and technically can only be driven on the way to get car repaired.

Obviously, with me being a risk taking maverick, I ignore that technicality, & I drive my car right up till I can get the retest booked LOL

When you see these kinds of repairs being done on the likes of Car SOS I always wonder what, if anything, is done to provide corrosion protection to the inside of the repair. No-one ever mentions wax injection for example.

With the average CarSOS resto costing £90k+ I'd be shocked if they didn't protect it, but you're right, they never mention it...

update.

On a recomendation of a neighbour of mine, who's recomemded a garage, who happens to do welding, I made an appointment for this morning.

They put the car on a ramp and had a look. to do the work needed for the mot and the advisory on the passanger side (same as the drivers side but not bad enough to fail yet). the grand total to fix both is £540 not counting getting a new mot on it

If that includes painting, yes, it's not cheap, but not extortionate. The decision is yours...

Isetta only ever used a box of Polyfilla and some rolled up newspapers 🤣

I do miss his fixes 😉

The decision has been made. After discussion with friends and family members, the decision is to scrap the car.

Now to find out who will offer me what price.

Update.

Replaced the car with my mum's 67 plate fiesta (mk7.5) with the ecoboost (boom) engine. A week later another car hit the side of my car. Both passenger side doors caved in possible pillar damage too. Car has been declared a total loss by my insurance.

Now yet again this month I'm car hunting. Maybe something from Japan or Germany this time...

Personally highly rate 'Japan', started off with a Datsun, and had 4 x Toyotas, and a Mitsubishi. All relatively reliable. Mum has a 23 year old Toyota Yaris, barely used any longer but I guarantee it'll start 1st twist of key, and passes every annual MOT...

Only about a dozen times! Huge fan of that franchise though love the cars in the early ones best.
