Ford Focus Stop/Start issue

Featured Replies

Right from when I bought my Ford Focus the auto stop start was strange. When I brake and put the clutch in, the engine cuts out even when still rolling at around 6/7mph. Then when stopped, I keep the clutch pressed in and then when I go to lift it, I get an error message to say press clutch to start engine. As you can imagine, this is annoying at roundabouts and things when you want to get going quickly. Recently the battery died and the car completely broke down. Ford said battery had loads of faults and failed all tests so they replaced it. However, the auto stop start problem is still happening. Any advice?

The latest Fords do cut out while rolling.  It's called 'Rolling Stop' and you can adjust the sensitivity/speed through the dash menus.

It should restart when you lift the clutch though.  Sounds like one of the pedal switches may be faulty.

Usually we would ask if the BMS was reset with the new battery but if a Ford garage fitted it then hopefully they'll have reset it.

bought ford focus mk4 2018 plate back in march but not had cause to want to use front windscreen (wired) heater, and have not thought about the auto stop start function.

weather has brought a need to use the windscreen heater, light is on but not functioning.

also, when looking into auto s/s the dashboard talks about engine on due to battery charging but have been on a 4hr journey, more than enough time for the battery to recharged, and auto s/s still not working.

I bought a warranty from ford when I bought car.

does anyone have an idea as to whether this is likely to be a battery fault or anything else? will ford want to doa diagnostic first and charge me mammoth money to work that fault out?

You could drive to the Moon and back and that would not in anyway mean that the battery is fully charged.

Get a multimeter and measure the battery voltage first thing in the morning and see what the State Of Charge actually is.

If it's the original battery from 2018, there's a  very high probability that the battery needs replacing!
