Replacing/Repairing Sync 3 Unit - Transit Custom 68 Plate

Featured Replies

So I recently purchased my custom from a private seller, to find the Sync 3 screen / radio system has no power to it. All other electrics seem to be working on the dash, but the power and tune buttons on the sync unit have no light on them.

On removing the screen I have found that the wiring is damaged. Female input on the screen itself is missing housing and is just exposed board, and the male input also appears damaged.

Am I right in thinking that replacing the screen unit and cable would be a possible fix for this? Or, if this cable is only transmitting video then maybe it still won't fix the power issue?

Essentially Is this something that I could fix myself with a new screen unit and cable, or do I need to go to ford for a likely costly repair? Spoken to a local ford garage today who told me they would likely want to replace the entire wiring loom which would be very expensive!

Any advice would be great as am currently at a loss on next steps!

Hi, the power and tune buttons are on a separate cable from the head unit it should be the black plug, is that the one that’s damaged?

you can pick up a screen from eBay for between £100-£150 they aren’t coded to the vehicle and I’m assuming you can get the video cable too if not they are £25 new,

I know about the units not being coded as I had to replace mine recently after the black screen of death,

be very careful with the screens as they are delicate, if you can get the cable first then try and test the screen at the sellers before committing.

mine didn’t come on straight away I had to lock the van then unlock and all good 😎

Thanks for your response Barnetto 👍🏻

Not sure if my text posted with above images..

The black cable doesn't appear significantly damaged but does look like it might have been tampered with as some tape is undone. I noticed that after unplugging this black one, the rest of the button lights on the screen unit (back, play, forward etc) have also gone off. Which makes me think this cable is still supplying power? at least partially? I was hoping I wouldn't have to replace this one 😅. Attached images of the screen with and without this cable connected.

The yellow video cable however is definitely damaged, and the input on the back of the screen also non-existent. I've ordered a new screen today but struggling to find a replacement video cable. Short ones are available but as the APIM is in the glovebox I need one of an awkward length it seems. Don't suppose you know where I can get one new? I also can't figure out the wire run from the screen to the APIM. The video cable disappears down a very tight gap alongside what I think is the main wiring loom (?) thick black cable. I think the current video cable may actually feed into this which would make it harder to remove

Is the video cable itself damaged or just the connector? If it’s just the connector you can simply unclick the female part that is usually attached to the screen,

with the black connector cable I’d be removing the tape to see what’s been done and checking that all the pins are seated correctly in the connector,

mines a sync 2.5 (no built in satnav) so my unit is behind the screen and the video cable is about 20cm long,

Check those things I’ve said and report back 👍🏼

Haven't had a chance to look at it today but should be able to get at it tomorrow.

So the connector just clips on and off? No soldering or anything like that needed? if that's the case I may be able to just buy a small cable and use the new connector from this. I suspect this may be easier than finding a connector on its own and they're cheap enough. From what I can see the cable itself isn't damaged. However most of it is behind the dash.

Is your APIM directly behind the screen then? the radio/head unit is behind mine at the top of the dash but I don't think this is where the wires from the screen are feeding, the video cable at least I believe is going to the APIM which in my van is above the glovebox.

thanks 👍🏻

The connector comes apart where the blue line is, the bigger part on  the pic is meant to be soldered to the screen so discard that, the part that’s connected to the cable will then just plug into your new screen and work,

the connector for the buttons is the black connector that part on mine is part of the main loom but the video (gold screen connector) just plugs straight into the head unit behind the screen on mine

no dice unfortunately 🥲

Was able to unclip the video connection and connect both cables to new screen but still nothing by the looks of it..

at this point may be ready to go to the local ford garage 😅 could be APIM? or the black cable maybe. it is seemingly powering the rest of the buttons though ..

Have you tried locking the van leaving it a few minutes then trying, mine took a few minutes to come on

  • Author

Yep I tried it, no joy! 😔

Was the screen you bought used and if so tested and 100% working?

  • Author

I bought it off eBay so it's hard to absolutely verify, but it was sold as tested and working. It's a screen from a 2023 transit..

for what it's worth, JK2T-14G371-ADB, I believe is the part number for the APIM in my van.

Also, the USB ports in my van do work. Not sure if this is relevant but I have seen some posts around that suggest these could be connected with the APIM ..

Have you tried holding the vol and fast forward button for 5-10 seconds?

  • Author

I have yeah, also tried leaving the battery disconnected for about 9 hours previously but actually that was before I knew the connection behind the screen was knackered 😅

Sorry buddy sounds like there’s something more to the issue, hope you get it sorted

appreciate the help anyway mate thank you 👍🏻

will post again when I eventually do get it sorted 😅
