Ford Focus MK4 Hunting and Juddering

Featured Replies

My car specs...
Ford Focus MK4 2020 1.5L Ecoblue Automatic (118HP/120PS/88KW)

The problem…
(There are good days and bad days, this does not always happen and it doesn’t matter if the car is cold or warmed up)

- Car surges/stutters when driving normally and the car is hunting (rev bouncing up by 200RPM) when driving on the motorway.

- Going uphill the car judders/hicups quite a lot so I have to increase acceleration to get the car to change gear to try and smooth it out.

- When I bought the car, it was really bad. My dad was driving it, (As I only had a provisional license at the time) and I thought he was pumping the brakes as he was driving.

- Car accelerates and pulls well with no problems under heavy acceleration/kick down.

What I’ve done…
- I had a new DPF installed last year due to an engine warning light a month after I bought the car.
- Cleaned the air filter and MAF sensor.
- I’ve tried both premium and supermarket fuels.
- I’ve added fuel additives to maybe clean the fuel injectors.
- Tested the battery voltage, all is good.
- Used a basic OBD reader (no errors) tested only at idle.
- I used my laptop with FORScan to see if I could find anything, and tested only at idle.
- Asked Ford sales advisors, they said “TCU is learning my way of driving”. (It’s not that)
- Recently passed MOT with no advisories.

Could it be…
- Fuse or relay?
- Ecu problems?
- Module updates?
- Fuel Filter or pump?
- EGR filter from cooler to EGR pipe?
- Clogged fuel injectors?
- Torque converter problems?

I'm having similar issues with basically the same car, 170k km on mine. Had a mechanic friend take a look and he's "90% sure its gearbox related" but can't say exactly what as he doesn't know these boxes well enough to hazard a guess.

I'm considering going for a gearbox fluid change as it's never been done, although my mechanic friend said that sometimes on these 'no service' boxes, it can actually cause more issues in certain cases.

Was thinking to go for the fluid change, get the TCM and PCM software updated at dealership and then do the clutch and transmission hard-relearn process as described in this post.

Have you tried cleaning the gasket on the EGR cooler pipe, it has a mesh on the gasket.  Either replace or use a cleaner to clean it.
