Oil Stains on Driveway - Best Solution / Method to Remove

Featured Replies

Hi,

Can anyone recommend some products or techniques for removing oil stains on the driveway?

It's a tarmac'd driveway if that helps with a particular product or technique.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thank you.

It's difficult to shift oil off tarmac, as it soaks in and softens the tarmac.

When I spill oil on mine, I squirt some washing up liquid on it and spread it round with a hard broom. Leave it to soak for an hour or so, then hose it down. Repeat several times, as necessary.

An underestimated product for soaking up all sorts of errant spills! Though I do have a cat as well 😂

Once scrubbed in water based white spirit then gave it a good going over with washing up liquid, rinse away - try again.

Thanks for the help. Some of the stains / spills are newer than others, some a quite old.

Do I use a pressure washer to remove them?

What about using bicarbonate of soda to soak them up or kitty litter? Or is that only on initial spills.

From personal experience, I would not use a pressure washer on tarmac, it just lifts it up as it's so relatively soft. Or, like all best cleaning instructions, try on an inconspicuous area first to see the effect!

Pressure washer is a very bad idea for this.  Where it doesn't lift the tarmac it just forces the stain deeper in.

Biological washing powder can be used to soak up fresh spills and to break down the oil for those of us without a cat.

Realistically if it's been more than a day or two then the stain will probably never be fully removed.
