Question about Focus headlights

Featured Replies

Hey

I'm on the lookout for a Focus estate Vignale. 20/21 plate ideally. I'm a bit confused about headlights. All the ones I've seen (Autotrader) say they have LED headlights. None have manual levelling, some have headlight wash, some don't. And there seems to be 2 different designs of headlight

Could someone enlighten me please?

Thanks

Gary

Pre facelift Mk4 Vignales all had LED headlights

Standard fit were fixed LEDs, NO headlamp wash

Optional Adaptive LEDs with Headlamp wash

Headlight wash was dropped from the adaptive in 2020.

And then that👍

Brilliant! Thanks very much 👍

There was briefly a 'Vignale Edition' spec at the end of 2020 into 2021, which included the adaptive headlights as standard.

From what I understand, Vignale edition, was only in manual and not auto.

Which leads me to another question.

It will definitely be an auto, and ideally have stop and go. But there are only some engines where stop and go work aren't there?

Am I right in thinking stop and go will only work on the petrol engines? And although I've read a lot of threads, I'm still unsure,  which is the best engine and which should be avoided? I'll forgo stop and go if necessary, but not auto.

1.0T ecoboost, 1.5T ecoboost petrol. 1.5 ecoblue, 2.0 ecoblue diesel. Are these the only engine options?

Also, and don't shoot me down in flames, I don't want the digital dash. Just prefer the look of the older one, so I guess I'm looking at nothing newer than 2020. Obviously I do realise that I can fit an older non digital cluster myself, and if it comes to it I will do that.

Thanks

Stop/start is nothing more than a marketing ploy to reach an unobtainable MPG figure for certification. It'll never work properly in a car and this forum is littered with 100s of posts of 'why isn't my stop/start' working. You're better off without it, or at the very least, accept it's a very fragile system...

Diesel also has Stop & Go, it's basically any Focus with 8 speed auto and adaptive cruise control (Driver's assistance pack)

IMO 1.5 Ecoblue is the best, but I still wouldn't recommend any Ford with auto transmission.

Go and get yourself a nice spec'd 120d or 120i auto

I didn't realise at the time but you are right about the Vignale Edition being manual only.  So you would have to stick with the standard Vignale for an auto.

The digital dash isn't great on these so I don't think anyone will shoot you down for not wanting it.  VW's version was considerably better.

Yes, those are the only engine options.  The 1.0 EcoBoost is only 125ps non-MHEV with auto at that age so I would avoid that one.  1.5 EcoBoost is 182bhp and that is the one I'd go for.  2.0 EcoBlue is plenty powerful enough but not as economical as you'd hope and they have wetbelts which are costly to replace as part of routine maintenance and could cause reliability issues further down the line.  1.5 EcoBlue is fairly reliable and economical but is a bit 'bland' in the context of a Vignale.

I'm not aware of the diesels being incompatible with stop & go, there shouldn't be any limitation to that with an auto gearbox.

Stop & Go is part of the adaptive cruise control on automatics.  It means the car fully drives itself in traffic.  Obviously not possible on a manual with the need for a clutch press to come to a complete stop.

No, any 8 speed auto is compatible (Rotary Dial)

Stop and Go is different to Stop Start.

Stop and Go is the adaptive cruise controls ability to come to a complete stop and go again when following traffic.

If stopped for less than three seconds I believe, otherwise you have to just tickle the throttle to get it to pull away again, or even, maybe, just press "resume"

Thats all a big help. Thank you all

I know stop and go is not possible on my Transit Custom auto, with adaptive cruise. I take it thats because its 6 speed auto? and not because its diesel then?

Understand what you're saying about Ford autos, but have to say, I've never had a problem, and have had Ford autos going back to 1983. My Custom drives lovely and so does our Fiesta MHEV Vignale. Both have very low mileage though.

And yes, if stopped for more than a few seconds, pressing resume, starts it again

Looks like I'll be on the look out for a 1.5 petrol or 2.0 diesel. I do like how quickly diesels warm up in the cold, with the PTC heater. Just need to wait for the right one to come along now. Always something not quite right. Has to have a pan roof and power tailgate. Apart from that not fussed. Oh and paddle shift and adaptive LEDs, not fixed. And in the right colour...😁

Yes

Just be mindful that the 2.0 Ecoblue has a wet belt that can be unreliable, they're proving worse than the 1.0 Ecoboosts, plus they had issues with injectors on early cars and there now seem to be issues with the torque converters on autos.

My advice would be a 1.5 Ecoblue Diesel, they're not that much slower but much better on fuel

Oh and paddle shift

Ford took the paddle shifts of nearly all Focus except ST-Lines so make sure it has it fitted. If there is an "L" on the top of the rotor then no paddles

But my absolute advice would be a well spec'd 120d

I will bear all that in mind. Thank you
