CanEGR valve cause exhaust smoke to leak upwards

I'm still struggling with my 1.6TDCI Focus 2011. On start up exhaust smelling smoke is pouring upwards from the back of the engine. Checked pipes etc, could it leak from EGR valve or the cooler as I just can't pinpoint it

    Yes.  And it'll smell horrific as it's raw exhaust, which hasn't been through the cat at that point.
