Mk2 - Gearbox Replacement / Compatability

Featured Replies

Hi can anyone advise which gearboxes are compatible with my vehicle?

Current part is:

4M5R-7002-NE

1744432

Are all the IB5 family of gearboxes available?

The only difference I can see with them is the casing but I would think the internals / gear ratios would be different between petrol and diesel engines?

I require the casing that has the following cut out

Appreciate any help.

Thank you

Correct and engine size too.

NF, NG, NH etc will all be OK

So it needs to be like for like. Got it. I’ll start hunting for those part numbers. Thank you @DaveT70

What's wrong with yours?  Maybe a rebuild be a safer option if you intend to keep the car long term.  Used Mk2 gearboxes will all be around 15 years old now.

It’s whining.

Also when in neutral you can depress the clutch and the noise disappears. But when released it comes back.

So I am guessing the box is burnt out due to low oil. The gears have lost there hardened layer and have pitted is my guess. So when they are meshing it creates the whine?

Or maybe it’s just a bad set of bearings?

Or output shaft end has disintegrated (where it’s used as a bearing surface for the output shaft roller bearing)?

Hmm, ok.  That's a bit beyond me I'm afraid.  I think it would be worth asking a transmission specialist for their opinion before going any further.  There's no way of knowing the condition of a used gearbox until you fit it.

Sounds like a good idea. But would they really know just from driving or listening?

For this sort of thing it has to be gearbox off and opened up to perform a proper assessment would be my thinking?

They should be able to give a rough idea from listening after years of experience.

Very much not recommended to go back.

Parts are forwards compatible but quite often they are not backwards compatible.

So a lower letter may not have a reverse gear? :whistling:

Got myself a replacement with matching part number (4M5R-7002-NE).

Let's hope it's OK.

I am tempted to strip it down first to inspect it and see if is damaged?

Checking the registration it's done about 104,000miles.
