Mk2 - Driveshaft / Oil Seal Leak Post Clutch Change

Featured Replies

So after doing my clutch, flywheel and concentric slave cylinder on my IB5 gearbox I've noticed it is leaking from the where the splines of the driveshaft enter the

gearbox (into the differential).

Whilst the box was off I replaced both the output shaft seals so I am not sure why they would be leaking.

I was careful not to damage them when installing and also when inserting the driveshaft.

I am now starting to think maybe I didn't push the driveshafts in hard enough.

It's the LHS / OFFSIDE driveshaft (shorter one) that is causing me troubles.

It seemed to go in ok on install but perhaps it didn't go fully home?

BUT if it is correctly installed why would it still be leaking? Bad part? Incorrectly installed? Does the position / how far the oil seal is installed matter?

I used a pair of Corteco Shaft Seal 12019597B.

Installed using a large socket that was the same diameter / slightly undersize (55mm) as the oil seal.

If the Circlip did not engage then I think the Driveshaft would have came out enough for you to loose drive the first time you turned the Steering Wheel.

That is what happened to me once when replacing a Driveshaft because the Circlip that came with it was slightly too wide, luckily it happened in my street because I couldn't drive the car any further.

When I put the old Circlip in it was perfectly ok.

I don't understand why your Seals are leaking though unless they were damaged when inserting the Driveshaft or they are a poor quality or wrong aftermarket part.

With cheap things like Seals I prefer to go OE for peace of mind, look what happened above when I fitted the aftermarket Driveshaft.

So the the driveshafts themselves have been replaced with aftermarket versions from J&R driveshafts.

DS337

DS338

Now suspecting they might be slightly undersize which is allowing oil to pass by the output shaft seals?

It's only apparent on LHS (nearside) driveshaft output shaft seal

I've replaced the oil seals with as above Corteco Shaft Seal 12019597B.

As far as I am aware they are installed correctly so I am at a loss as to why it is still leaking.

Perhaps I just need to get a pair of OEM seals and try those?

Was hoping for some words of wisdom?

Guess I’ll go down the route of trying an OEM oil seal and then failing that changing the driveshaft.

Or perhaps the surface of the gearbox has worn / damaged?

Still thinking maybe I need to relook at the installation of the oil seals and how far you should press them in. Should they sit just under flush of the gearbox casing?
