2011 1.6 diesel s-max

Featured Replies

Hi all I'm after some help, while driving my 2011 1.6 s-max (1.6 TDCi Econetic) on the motorway, the engine died..RAC came out and said problem was camshaft position sensor. I have put a new one in and reset faults car will still not start and camshaft position sensor fault reappears along with neutral position sensor fault.

Any advice would be appreciated Screenshot_20241110_110258_SamsungInternet.thumb.jpg.36250aa496d73179ac891aaf0b4901fe.jpg

First thought would be cambelt failure.  Can you confirm the camshaft is actually turning when cranked on the starter?

Hi yes I can confirm belt is OK and spinning cam.

Ok.  You will need to check the wiring between the cam sensor and the PCM next.

Sounds fun OK will do that next thanks

Wiring checks out OK, I'm assuming the 1.6 only has one cam sensor? Being a single cam engine.

Would the crankshaft sensor effect cam sensor as the original fault said "camshaft-crankshaft * although that error hasn't come back on just the cam sensor.

Interesting question...  I was assuming this would be the 8v engine at 2011, but I don't know the S-Max well enough to know when the crossover was on those?  Some Mk2 Focus's were still being registered with the 16v engine in 2011.  If it is the 8v engine then yes it just has one cam sensor.

The PCM measures the difference between the cam and crank sensors, so a faulty crank sensor will affect the synchronisation checks.

Unfortunately your code reader doesn't show the actual codes, so there is no way to determine whether it's suggesting a wiring fault or a sync fault in this case.

You need to get the full Ford specific DTC's. Your code reader is only giving you the basic generic codes to point you in the general direction of the problem.

I recommend that you use FORScan, either the windows laptop version (free) or the one of the phone versions (£7) and get the Ford DTC's which will probably identify the sensor fault more accurately.

FORScan (for use with Windows Laptop) : https://forscan.org/download.html

It's what many Ford owners use including some Ford technicians.

OK thanks I'm using a Launch 12xi with ford software was hoping this would be good enough.

I've got a crank sensor I will fit as a matter of corse.

Thanks Tomsfocus, I have bought a crank sensor so will try that.

Also a fault showing for neutral position sensor but all I can find on this is they seem to be for automatics mine being manual I've searched car spares places with reg and none seem to list one nothing showing on Ebay either.

Does it even have one?.

If it's got stop/start it will have a neutral position sensor.  Though that may be a red herring caused by a generic scanner, I wouldn't take too much notice of that one for now.  Manuals don't need to be in neutral to start them so we know that can't be causing your non-start fault.

That is the 8v engine.  So definitely just one cam and one sensor.

Yeah it does have stop/start but doesn't work due to a fault I thought it was because it's got a normal battery on but must be the sensor, had not problems with that not working so yes I will ignore that one thanks.

  • Author

Yeah that was my thinking.

Guy at work suggests the new sensor may have to be programmed to car? 2011 a bit old? If so would it be possible with forscan on laptop?

Cam sensor shouldn't need to be programmed.  It's a very basic sensor.

  • Author

Yeah thinking same, the car should accept it when faults are cleared.

Another suggestion is the pick up on cambelt pully.
