2012 S Max clonking noise from rear - trailing arm bush?

Featured Replies

As title, car is making a clonking noise, mostly on more uneven road surfaces or occasionally when direction/speed changes occur.

Jacked it up and seems to have some movement I wouldn’t expect to find on the OS trailing arm front bush, this one in pic below.

Haven’t compared to the other side yet, and it isn’t flopping in and out of the arm, but don’t want to misdiagnose and spend time/money, can this bush be responsible for those sorts of noises?

If it has become detached (or almost) from the outer bush housing then likely to need changing?

Would first be an advisory but if too far gone (depends on tester) would be MOT fail for obvious reasons and I believe could easily cause clonking noise (any signs of metal to metal or other damage?) but check other side too?

See what Alan does...

And check all the other bushes and the ball joints on the 2 drop links (a very likely cause of clonking!) as well!

If it's got stop/start it will have a neutral position sensor.  Though that may be a red herring caused by a generic scanner, I wouldn't take too much notice of that one for now.  Manuals don't need to be in neutral to start them so we know that can't be causing your non-start fault.

That is the 8v engine.  So definitely just one cam and one sensor.

Change crank sensor and no difference, I work away so will have to go back to it in a couple of weeks.

I will get forscan on my laptop for then.

Thanks for all your help this far.

Am I missing something here ? 🤔

The above post from @Sean123456 has nothing to do with the subject of this thread.
