Ford Focus 2009 tdci (diesel) won't start

Featured Replies

Hey guys, firstly I don't know much about cars so bare with me.

I own the above car. Was driving good but I did get the alerts from the dash every week or so (transmission failure, service oil & engine malfunction), then last week as I pulled into my driveway the car suddenly died. I was able to roll it to my car port where I could park and then tried to start it but I get nothing but rapid clicking from the hood.

I have now drained the battery from trying to start it too many times so it's completely dead now.

I looked up online about potential issues and one thing that I keep is the instrument solder issue on the cluster board. Could it be this?

I did book a mobile mechanic who came and ran a scanner but he could not get it started. He mentioned it could be the key transponder.

He sent me the codes which I have attached

I'd first get the battery charged, tested and replaced if necessary as lots of the faults look battery/voltage related (and faults may may need to be cleared?)
Unless I'm missing the point, why didn't the tech boost the battery, clear the faults and rule out (or in?) the transponder (again, possibly related to battery) and any other faults that may clear if battery is OK?

How old is it (you're always on borrowed time!)?

This does just sound like a knackered battery.  Though as above, I'm hoping the tech checked it?

Next thing I'd check is the battery cables.  Particularly the thick black negative cable under the battery.  It's probably frayed and just hanging by a thread.

He did test the battery and fuses, and said they are all OK and the battery just drained because I tried to start it too many times. I have bought a battery charger I will charge it up and let you know.

Thanks for the reply

He did, and said battery is fine.

I will charge battery, check cables as you said and try again.

I don't have a scanner. If I charge battery, or buy a new one will I have to get the codes cleared by a scanner?

Charge it first then get it tested if you like as I'm uncertain how the battery could be tested if it was flat but that's just me (very unlucky with batteries!)

Codes may just hang around like a bad smell, (better to get them cleared?)

All on here rate Forscan (free laptop, best, or mobile software for reading and clearing plus more) but you'll need a decent lead (recommendations on the site) I have:

Available on Amazon.
