Ford eco mode petals

Featured Replies

Hi all does anyone know much about the ford eco mode regarding the petals?

Why buy an ST if you're bothered about that?😀 Long time since I had a car with the petals but relevant handbook extract below. All fairly obvious stuff:

Eco Mode - Principle of Operation

Ford Logo

PRINCIPLE OF OPERATION

The system assists the driver to drive more efficiently by constantly monitoring characteristics of gear changing, anticipation of traffic conditions and speeds on freeways and open roads.
Note:   These efficiency values do not result in a defined fuel consumption figure. It might vary as it is not only related to these driving disciplines but also influenced by many other factors such as short journeys and cold starts.
Note:   Frequent short journeys, where the engine does not fully warm up, will also increase fuel consumption.
The value of these characteristics is represented by petals shown in the display, with five petals being the most efficient. The more efficiently you drive, the better the rating, and the better your overall fuel consumption.
Type 1
ECO Mode Screen
Aempty.gifGear shifting
Bempty.gifAnticipation
Cempty.gifEfficient speed
Gear shifting
Using the highest drivable gear appropriate for the road conditions will improve fuel consumption.
Anticipation
Adjusting your vehicle speed and the distance to other vehicles without the need for heavy braking or acceleration will improve fuel consumption.
Efficient speed
Higher speeds use more fuel. Reducing your cruising speed on open roads will improve fuel consumption.
Type 2 and 3
The relevant information will be shown in the display.

Focus Owner's Manual

Well that sounds like total b###### 🤣

So in short, spend all your driving time concentrating on gear changes. Worry about how to use the accelerator and the brakes, and at the end of it all get to your destination stressed out, and having very probably used the same amount of fuel 🙄

LoL cheers...so no one really knows if you can actually get rid of ALL the petals when you reset

Drive it like an ST is meant to be driven and you’ll get rid of all the petals.

I get that but i just want to know...

As far as I remember you only get this in eco mode anyway, and resetting the average fuel consumption takes it back to zero. I'm sure it's in the handbook somewhere..........

It doesn't say anything really mate...I know how to reset etc but when I do it still leaves one green petal?!

When you reset it just starts off again if you are still in the "eco mode" setting in the information displays. The menu structure for the displays is in the handbook so you just need to change what you are displaying.

I cant recall exactly which screen you need to go into as it's over 10 years since I had a car with that "feature" but I don't recall any difficulty and I'm pretty technophobic!😀

NB I assume you know that "eco mode" in the Focus 3 (and contemporary models like the C-Max) isn't actually a mode at all in the same way as in other models. It doesn't physically change anything, e.g. throttle response, aircon, etc, it's just a report on your driving to help drive more economically. So if you don't want to see any petals, there's no point using it.

I get all this mate...my question is when reset does it sill leave one petalc? Is there a way I can remove ALL petals?

If you do want to use the "eco mode" display for some reason, afaik the only reset is as mentioned. I recall seeing people posting on old threads that even after reset they still got some, presume even idling would bring one up pretty quickly.

I remembered seeing this on another forum (,https://www.bmaxownersclub.co.uk/threads/can-you-reset-ford-eco-stats.420/) but the link to the Ford document mentioned in the excerpt below is "dead" now:

...EcoMode scores driving performance on a cumulative basis but the system can be zeroed
by resetting the average fuel consumption trip. When this happens, drivers start with 2
petals in each index. Motorists who score more than 75% efficiency will be rewarded with
an advanced ECO Driver graphic in the cluster. Hit 95% and they'll be crowned ECO
Champion...."

There were a lot of threads on this 10 or more years ago, but they quickly dried up once people realised it's just a "school report" not a proper drive mode.

Can't add any more myself, If anyone's actually still using it, they might be able to add a comment.

...with being labeled 'sad', and will have their ST-3 crushed to end it's suffering 🤣

So you cant answer my question either?!

Thanks for that mate I appreciate it...so basically after reset you are left with petals which can not be reset?

Yes I can fully answer your question easily. All I need to do is copy and paste the answers and explanations given by Roger @Eric Bloodaxe There really is nothing more that anyone can say, not even Henry Ford himself.

So it seems.

Okay

  • 3 months later...

Hi,

I've had my 2012 TXS Mondeo for 4 years now. Recently have had two injector seals done, dunno if this is important. But in the ECO scoring I have zero petals in anticipation. The other two are full. I've never had this before. I've always had 3 to 5 petals if each one. Never a zero.

What electrical signals are pulled from what sensors to cube up with these scores?

Like, do I have a binding calliper or something that I don't know of? Or is it a fuel delivery sensor it works from? My driving style hasn't changed in that time at all. Still working in the same place so not driving any different roads etc.

It's annoying me more than it should.
