Drum brake adjusters Ford fiesta 1.4 tdci 03

Featured Replies

Hi there ,the drum brake adjusters don't seem to adjust themselves is there anyway to get access to the cog to adjust them manually without taking the wheels off ,I have looked at the adjuster while it is installed and i can't for the life in me figure out what automatic action the break shoes would actually do to turn the cog to make it self adjusting .thanks

Ford self-adjusting rear drum brakes never seem to work properly.

Your best bet is to remove the drums, check the cylinders for fluid leaks, clean up all the components, grease the friction surfaces (obviously not the drum and shoe surfaces!!).

Manually adjust the self-adjusters until the drums can just slide over the shoes. Press the brake pedal a few times to settle the shoes, and check they just lightly rub the drums. If they don't, adjust them a little bit more. You may need to take the drums off and on a few times for the best results.

If it were me, I would take the opportunity to fit new shoes at the same time.

Some cars have a hole in the drum or backplate specifically so you can adjust the shoes without removing the drums, though I don't know whether Fiestas do.

Auto-adjusters never seem to work properly in my experience.  They are basically a corkscrew inside a threaded tube with a bit of spring tension on them all the time trying to 'unscrew' them.  As the shoes get further away, the adjuster gets unscrewed, which should keep the shoes in perfect alignment indefinitely.  There is also a ratchet mechanism to prevent the shoes moving too far backwards when releasing.

If the Handbrake Cable has been set too tight the Self Adjusters will not work properly.

Thanks Yog, Tomsfocus and Tizer for your replies ,I did notice an hole which had a rubber plug but it wasn't lined up with the ratchet part it must be for access to something else.

That hole is to release the Handbrake Lever to get the Drum off if there's a Lip.
