Transmission issue

Featured Replies

Hi there,

I recently bought an automatic Ford Focus 2013 Titanium 1.6. I bought it from a used car dealership about 2-3 weeks ago. The MOT history was very clean and it’s in very good condition. I have driven it less that 50 miles since purchase.

A couple days ago while driving, I lost power. The engine was still running but when I would accelerate, I was only getting revs and was not moving forward. Just before I pulled over I could see on the dashboard that no gear was selected (I was in D before it kicked out)

I turned the car off and on and tried to put it in gear but the gearshift would not budge, solid like a rock. I restarted the car, it went into gear and tried to drive it home in Sport mode thinking it wouldn’t slip like D did. Less than a mile later, the engine completely cut out, I had no power and the engine had turned itself off (i assume it could’ve done it for safety reasons)

The car started making a beeping noise with the “engine malfunction, service now” screen on it. I pulled over again, managed to get into gear again but didn’t want to risk the drive.

The car is still in the one month warranty from the dealership and I don’t want them to do a makeshift job just so the car lasts the rest of the warranty before dying again.

Any help is appreciated.

EDIT: I’m still a learner driver and I know hardly anything about cars.

Dealer should be your first port of call. Consumer legislation gives you up to 6 months rights to repair or replacement. Lots of summaries like this on line:

I would give them the car back for a refund.

Definitely fully charge the battery

But, at that age, it could be a multitude of things
