Absolute throttle position

Featured Replies

Hi my absolute throttle position on my fault finder is 0% idling and when I eccelarate it stays the same no movement at all even on live stream straight line across runs nice great on fuel but service now comes on and goes into limp mode but when I turn off engine and start again it goes off doesn't come back for a while please any idea do I need to replace.

Does it close (100% presumably on your Scan Tool) when you switch off then cycle between open/close for a few seconds (you should be able to see and hear that without a Scan tool) and does the Engine not stop instantly when you switch off?.

Funnily enough there was a Mobile Mechanic working on a neighbours Diesel Jag and guess what, he was changing a faulty Throttle Valve Assembly.

The OBD scanner only has live data don't think I can turn on or off on scanner but on live data it just one straight line no movement at all when accelerate but it runs lovely and fuel just been to skegness and I had 235 miles of fuel the journey was 156 there back plus a few more when I got back I had only used 85 miles of fuel runs for ever but accelerate up to 2500 service light comes on and into limp mode till I switch off and on again then doesn't come on for a while or days drive up down gear normally doesn't come on.

Do a physical check if your Scan tool will not help you.

Firstly, you need a better scanner to get the Ford specific codes (Forscan seems to be the recommended one on this forum).

Also, the "throttle valve" would seem to me to be operating correctly. On a modern diesel, the valve stays fully open when the engine is running, and only shuts off when the engine is stopped, to shut the engine down quickly. All the engine running is controlled electronically by altering the amount and timing of fuel injected, not by closing off the air supply.

This is what it says on fault finder at moment no fault codes but this is what it says for below this is idling plus at 2000rpm.

If you want to fix the problem yourself you need a better Scan tool. FORScan will tell you what the Fault Code is and allow you to access proper Live Data for a very reasonable price.

When you started this thread I thought that you knew what a Throttle Valve on a Diesel car was but given your answers I don't think you do and the Scan tool that you have is just confusing things as well as being next to useless.

To echo what Alan said, the Throttle Valve has nothing whatsoever to do with the Accelerator or Fuelling.

I'm no expert never said I was it's just annoying me that when I accelerate to high it puts service light on and into limp mode throws up code like p2279 but turn off and on then rums perfect for a while till next time.

If you had said that you were getting a P2279 Code before then I'm sure you would have got some more useful replies. There may be other Ford Specific Codes that your reader can't pick up though.

The MAP reading at 2800 rpm did look a little low to me but is the car was stationary then it may be correct and the MAF reading looked a little high at Idle unless it was a very cold Engine.

The best Electronic way of checking for an Air Leak is to graph the MAF and MAP while driving on the road, they should both look the same as each other and forget about the Throttle.

Checked earlier when the service light came on and this time the engine management light pop on as well checked codes this is what popped up

Current code P1102 maf sensor in range but lower than expected.

Pending code P2279 intake air system leak.

Both these Codes more or less point to the same thing, there may be an Air Leak.

This is not definite though, any Code is just a starting point to point you in the right direction.

The MAF measures the volume of air that the Engine is sucking in. The Sensor is could be faulty or even dirty though and it would be worth trying to clean it carefully. Google is your friend for details about cleaning it.

There could also be wiring faults, EGR fault or a Throttle Valve fault.
