Loud engine

Featured Replies

I noticed my engine has been really loud about a minute after starting my car, while driving and even continues for a few seconds after shutting the engine.

The noise itself is very loud and am sure can be heard outside the car, potentially sounding like those cars with modifications (I don't know the terms) even though I have none.

Also, the noise seemed to go away after I filled up my car with petrol, but the noise has come back a couple of days after.

Any ideas what this could be? Or what I can take a look at?

Engine size - 1242cc

Thanks!

It would help if we knew what engine your car has 🤔

At least it's not an ecoboom. First thoughts with noise continuing after switch off could be the electric cooling fan, possibly a/c compressor?

Then "sounding like a modified car" made me think noisy/blowing exhaust - but that wouldn't occur with the engine off.

Noise going away after fill up, then returns after a couple of days? Something loose perhaps?

Thanks for the response! I'm hoping it's something loose

I'm very much a beginner when it comes to this stuff so I wouldn't know where to look with the other stuff. Maybe it'll be better if I snap a pic of the engine.

Better still if you could get a recording on your phone. Someone (with better hearing than me!) might be able to identify the sound.

BTW, when the sound is present, is it continuous or intermittent? Does it occur at any particular speed or engine RPM?

It's continuous, and happens at all speeds and RPMs from what I've experienced so far. I drove it today and the noise went away so now I'm very confused.

I've taken a picture of the engine (attached) and will make a video if the noise does come back
