Mk2 handbrake not holding

Featured Replies

I live in Spain with my 2006 Mk2 Focus 2.0 TDCi. It failed the ITV (MOT) on the handbrake.

I changed the rear pads, although the old ones looked fine, I've cleaned and checked the calipers, wound the pistons in, and all working fine. I've replaced all three cables for the handbrake. I've adjusted the nut inside the car.

The brakes are working perfectly, but the handbrake, although better than before, is still not holding the way it should.

Could this just be a wearing in issue that the self adjusters will take care of?

Are you sure the handbrake cables are set correctly? The levers on the calipers should be just touching the stops on the calipers with the handbrake off.

Also, have you used standard brake pads? If you have used "performance" pads, these are likely to be harder, which will affect the parking brake performance.
