Featured Replies

Hi !

I got a my first car, 2 month ago and 2 after an high engine temp fault appeared but my engine was cold at the time and a week after the car was fine again without any reason, but a month ago the problem appeared again and the car since won't start and the battery is now dead, I change the sensor temp but nothing change and I don't know what to do, also when that warning is appearing my radio don't work even if I put the key in.

If anyone know what could be the problem or what i should please help.

No why ?

If the battery is dead you will need to either recharge or replace it.  The car won't start without a fully charged battery.

I know that but it isn't the biggest problem, the problem is that "high engine temp" warning which I don't know the cause.

Get the fault codes read

If the battery is low, or there is a problem with any of the circuit/earthing, then any sensor can show wrong/error readings, even if the sensor is good.

Make sure the battery is good, the earth is good/new/clean, (is there a 2nd earth from car body to engine block?) before you try to fix ANY problem, on any car.

Also - I hope you have checked the coolant level?

ETA it also sounds as if you may have an electrical problem anyway, which is causing the battery to drain.

That warning is usually caused by water or corrosion in the fusebox.

But you do need to start diagnosis with a fully charged battery otherwise that adds more problems.

I don't think there's any problem with the battery per sey since the battery discharged because I couldn't use start the car, the problem at hand is that I can't start the car because of the "high engine temp" fault and when someone tried to use their OBD it didn't work (We used his car to charge the battery) so I don't know what could cause that problem.

I also checked the coolant level and it's good, I just don't understand why that problem happened and disappear, it happened like 3-4 time and the car could start again either 3 hours after the problem happened or 1-2 weeks.

It's nothing to do with the actual coolant temp.  It's a fault with the electrical system.

I had exactly the same issue after jet washing the engine bay on my Fiesta a few years ago.  Once it dried out, it was fine again...  If water stays there long enough it creates corrosion, then the car won't work at all.

I see, is that the kind of that would cost me, and what kind of garage should i go to ?

That really depends on how confident you are with checking electrical parts.  The first check is just looking at the cables, plugs and fuses near the battery very carefully.  Then going inside the car and checking the cables, plugs and fuses in there as well.  If you find anything damp on the outside then it's probably going to be corroded (rusty) on the inside.

If you don't feel confident doing the work yourself, then it would be best to go to an auto-electrician and ask them to check the wiring for you.

As above - damp/water/corrosion.

The other possible cause is physically damaged wiring - this means that it is totally random when the damage allows flow of current, or nothing at all.

I would also say that charging your battery ONLY from another car's battery will only put in the minimum charge - get your battery on a proper fixed charger to see if it is in good condition.
