Focus MK3 service light on and not starting

Featured Replies

This is the second time this has happened now, the car has been starting up quite slowly recently but drives ok and everything works, I've  had the battery tested and its good so I

Last time the car did start when i put my foot on the gas whilst cranking, but then the car felt very touchy and jolty

Took it to the garage last time but they didnt really know what the issue was. Thanks

I'd be a very rich man if I got a £1 everytime someone said that, and then found out later that the battery finished.

The car's fuel injection system is automatically computer controlled for start up. Putting your foot on the acelerator when starting is not like on an a much older car. On yours if you press down far enough it will cause the PCM to assume the engine is flooded.

I assume this was a none Ford garage, and they were just using a genric code reader. You need to get yourself FORScan and read the Ford specific DTC's to see what the issue is. Or get an Auto-Electrician to take a look, since the fault sounds more electrical than mechanical.

I had this same problem a couple of years ago. Bought a new battery but didn't solve issue. Turns out connection to negative needed new fittings.

It seems like this is only happening when the engine is warm

Electrical resistance increases when warm, so if you've got a dodgy battery cable or a worn starter motor, both of those can be worse when warm.

I would also question the 'battery test' in this case though.

That wasn't mentioned earlier.  Was the starting fault the same before the new battery?

No this happened for the first time on Tuesday and then happened again yesterday, both times when i had been out and the engine was warm

I thought it'd been starting slowly recently?  Was that happening before the battery change?

I think you'll need the fault codes read by Ford specific diags to see what's causing the service light.

Would the OP like to start the story again ? It seems like it's turning over slowly a bit like the car 🤔

So the problem only occured for the first time on Tuesday this week and it happened again on Wednesday.

A new battery was fitted in September 2024, and it was "tested" recently I presume ?

When the engine is warm it 'twice' has turned over slowly when trying to start.

My conclusion: 🤔

The Battery State Of Charge is low. I expect the new battery was not fully charged for 12 hours before fitting and the car is being used infrequently and does few miles.

When the engine was warm the car wouldnt turn over at all and then the service light came on, left it for a while and then it was working normally

You need to get the fault codes read with Ford specific diagnostics.

Semi educated guess would be crank sensor fault if it's definitely not battery related.

Well that's a useful bit of information. Is there anything more ?

Now the car just doesnt really like to start, really takes its time just sounds like something isnt quite catching right to start up, it will crank once slowly then a second later will speed up a lot until it finally starts, sorry for my terrible explanations

This sounds more like a poor connection to the battery. Have you checked that everything was clean and done up nice and tight when the battery was changed. A while ago my son had starting problems with his S-max. Turned out the negative battery clamp wasn't tight.
