Ford Focus 2019 MK4 Chain Engine Crank Locking Help

Featured Replies

Hi All,

the old man and i are trying to investigate an issue with my 2019 Focus ST-Line. (b7da engine) It developed a loud rattle from the top of the engine and has suffered with a dip in performance. Chain belt engine. We took the sump off to check for any signs of damage, oil was clean and no metal.

Sound very much like you'd expect cam / lifter noise. So we wanted to take off the rocker cover. Seems that to do that on these newer ecoboost engines, you have to take the side covers off the engine too right down to the sump, and this means removing the crack bolt, pulley etc, a LOT of work just to to get to the cams!

Anywho, i've bought a torque multiplier, but cannot for the life of us see a way to lock the crank to use it. Getting to the flywheel without dropping the engine seems impossible. Theres a blanking bolt by where the Torque multiplier bracket bolts, you can sort of lock it, but it doesnt feel strong enough to use.

Any advice on if this is the correct way to get to the cams, and how you are meant to lock the crank and use the multiplier without dropping the engine?

Thanks in advance

Hi Louis,

Ford B7DA there is a new crank locking tool. You remove the 12V started motor and the tool fits in its place.

Note, that the cam shaft locking tools are also different for the B7DA engine.

The camshaft cover does have a few bolts conencted to the chain cover, but take a colser look, maybe it is possible to remove only those bolts and leave the chain cover and pulley in place.

I haven't done the work myself, but it sounds crazy to have to remove everything to get to the camshafts. BUT if you want to see the chain, then I think you must remove the chain cover and not the rocker cover.

Cheers

Later Edit: This is the rocker cover for B7DA B7DC engines.
