Serves Me right

Well I was crowing the other day about how good my MK 1 was and now My ignition switch looks like it’s knackered. The keys are pretty worn but I can’t get either of them fully into the ignition switch. Tried jiggling, lube etc no luck. Any thoughts please peeps? Is a new switch and keys even available? Mobile mechanic job or auto locksmith? Any ideas , experience appreciated.

Easy to find a new barrel.  Not so easy to replace it if you can't turn it...otherwise every thief would just pull the barrel out!

The correct way to remove it to turn the key to position 2 then tap a small tab in with a hammer to release the barrel, though if you can't turn the key at all that's going to be an issue.

Video here on the process - but, again, it assumes you can get the key to turn:

That is one very satisfying video to watch!

Should be position 1 not 2 to remove barrel.

You might just find a new key, cut to the code, not the old key, will probably do the trick.

Update. OK Guys. A neighbour recommended a local auto locksmith. Due to work pressure it made sense to let Him come to My house while I was out at work. A new key cut and it’s good to go. I had no idea how knackered the old one was. See photoimage.thumb.jpg.d9c20f23ae77565dbca865b41839c0fe.jpg

Handy too that the Mk1 doesn't have a PAT sensor in the key too. Great solution...
