Is this normal?

Featured Replies

When my car is on, and idle, every minute or so the engine becomes really loud as if I'm revving the car.

The noise lasts about 5-10 seconds then calms down for a minute. Then it happens again.

Has anybody on here experienced this before? If so, is there a fix?

P. S I recently got my battery replaced but this noise happened before the new battery too.

Open the bonnet and see if it's the radiator fan coming on.  That's much louder than the engine.

It shouldn't be on unless the engine is hot or you've got the AC on.

Thanks! I did have the heat on low so maybe that's what's causing the noise? Is that pretty normal then?

I'll start my car without the heat on and see if it makes the same noise. If it does, do you know what it could be? Does the radiator fan need replacing?

You need to physically look at the fan really.

If the AC is on (regardless of hot or cold) or the engine is hot after running for a while, then it is normal for the fan to come on.  If the engine is cold and the AC is not on then we would have to start looking for a fault.  It could be the fan controller or the grille shutters, it's unlikely to be the fan itself.

The noise could be the Air Conditioning Compressor cycling on and off if you had the Air Con on.

I had a Toyota company car once and that did it very loudly and frequently.
