Strange coolant leak

Featured Replies

Hello everyone!
My boss owns several 2014-2019 Ford Transits that I am usually tasked with taking care of. (it's a very small business, I am force fit "fleet maintenance"**) these vans are around 110000-280000 miles respectively.

I noticed on one of our older additions, a 2015 Ford Transit 3500HD with a 3.5L Gas/Petrol engine keeps losing coolant quickly. It seems now to go from every few days to every day I am filling it up with coolant. It's been driving me nuts and I have handed it off to him for the shop to deal with. (Dude is 80 and stubborn as a donkey) This shop is NOT trustworthy in the slightest, they keep saying they fixed this mysterious leak though it keeps coming back. I have reason to suspect it might be the head gasket starting to fail and eating coolant. Though we haven't seen anything in terms of blue smoke or overheating, then again, it's around 18 F most times when the vehicle is run the most. This is the third major repair we have had in a single week, one of our vans just blew a turbo. These guys ream him of cash every time he goes there, and he will refuse anyone else but Ford or myself to work on the vehicles.

Where in the world do you all think this leak is coming from? I have not done a CO gas check on the coolant just yet. I read somewhere that this may be the transmission cooler leaking internally as well. Any ideas? Anyone encounter this before?

Thanks for the read! 😁

**I am just a shade tree, not ASE approved. I spent majority of my time working on older Ford/BMW/Jaguar vehicles. I am more familiar with older Ford/BMW/Jaguar than I am familiar with New Ford and all its grandness of going into modern equipment with modules, electrical dependency, etc etc. I grew up being taught on cable driven throttles and vacuum powered accessories via my granddad and later on my mentor building classic Fords, Oldsmobiles, etc.

That'd be the first place to look

That'd be a good idea too.

Also, check the expansion tank does not have hair line cracks as this can cause leaking once hot
