Heating issue

Featured Replies

I have a 2023 Tourneo Custom, when driving the coolant temp gauge moves to the 90 degrees position, but when i park/idle it drops down to below 60 and the heating disappears to very cool even when turned up.

its been in to Ford who obviously drove it and said the heating disappears is ok but i did show the service manager the coolant gauge drop and the heating disappears from the vents cool down. Coolant levels checked and all ok no leaks etc- any ideas?  Thermostat?

Yeah, I'd check thermostat first, over cooling

Cheers, its frustrating that its been in to Ford and nothing showing up on diagnostics check but they can see the issue. Sitting here again to do school pickup and the gauge is as if the engine is off and the heat is slowly cooling away!

They tried to charge me £150 for the diagnostic check and thats my fear with this, no code no warranty pay out from Ford so dealership do nothing.

It's a 2023 vehicle. Give them 3 chances to correct the fault or tell them you are rejecting it. I bet that they will get it sorted very quickly after that.

If I understand correctly they've already had one chance to sort the problem, so two more tries left !!

This may not be a fault.  If you're sucking all the heat out through the cabin then the engine won't be able to produce enough at idle in cold weather to keep the engine warm and heat the cabin.

Any car Ive ever had heats up on idle from cold and put hot air through the vents.

I can start the car and not drive it and the temp gauge will not move nor put any heat in the cabin. Drive for 10 mins heat comes through temp gauge goes to 75, stop, idle, temp gauge falls to below 60 and no heat.

This cannot be right, how can an engine be running and not spare any heat for the cabin?

Seems to me the thermostat is to blame but no codes so no warranty repair.

Can anyone else test their transit/tourneo and see if the issue is replicated ? If so then Id believe its not an issue.

Hi Ryan,

Has your van centre found a solution to this problem?

We as a business have 3 Transit Customs and 2 of them (2023 models) have developed this fault, our dealer is unable to identify what the problem is. The van centre thinks it isn't a thermostat problem as both vehicles appear to warm up very quickly when driven but temperature drops when engine idling. One of the vans is going back in on Wednesday for it's 3rd visit, I don't really want to reject the vehicle as they are racked out but getting fed up with a fault that in theory should be easy to fix.

Thanks,

Paul.

Hi Paul,

no joy yet, Ive created a complaint with Ford Credit as it’s technically their van. They are going to get back to me within a month but asked for videos etc and to make sure I lodge a complaint with Ford UK too. I tried that before getting through to Ford Credit and they kept palming me off to the dealership. I can’t have the £150+vat argument every time I take it in and no fault codes. Ill keep you updated here. Absolute palaver!

Did you manage to sort this out ?

my 2021 does this ..

On an Easter Bank Holiday Monday, I'll give your Ford dealer a prize for dedication 🏆

Initially met with the usual argument of the diagnostic fee. Anyway, spoke to the service manager and showed him the coolant needle falling when idling, press the throttle and keep revs above idle and it begins to rise again- blockage, water pump, warped head- who knows- mechanical investigation required as diagnostics will not throw up a code. Lets see what happens. Reassuring to know that they have 4 engine replacements in ahead of me!

It's not a Bank Holiday in Scotland.

Thermostat replaced, drove home, all good with cold aircon on, switch to heat- same issue. Temp gauge drops and heat disappears.

booked back in on 3rd June…

Additionally, set the aircon back to cold and the temp gauge goes back towards 90, switch off heating altogether and it remains in place- neither increases nor decreasing- put heat into the cabin it decreases again.

This is all whilst stationary, drive and it increases.

What is going on?

Absolutely nothing would be my thoughts. In fact I'd be concerned if the temp didn't decrease under the conditions you describe.

But it doesnt increase, in fact loses temp, when idling from warm. That makes no sense.

Any car I've ever owned in the last 30 years gets up to running temp from cold without being driven. This one doesn't, well the gauge says it doesn't- I doubt the engine is cold after 15 mins of idling.

This is the first that this has ever happened.
