Ford Fiesta 1.0 Ecoboost Bearing clearance

Featured Replies

Hi everyone

I was just wondering if anyone knows what the big end Bearing clearance should be and what other bearing sizes are available ?

I have been looking for a chart that shows various Bearing clearances and what Bearings to fit for these different clearances.

I am looking to be using Plastigage to hopefully measure the current clearance on my Bearings.

Thanks for your help 🙏🏽🤠

I have been down this road myself and think I concluded that the best /only way is to buy a set of bearings from an aftermarket supplier as Ford doesn't sell them instead they will sell you a short block. I have some information from Ford stating that specialist equipment is needed which is why they don't sell those parts.

When I checked my spare engine the clearance on the mains was between 50 and 63 microns. I have done this with Plastigage which isn't the most accurate way but it gives you an idea.

Also, you will need new main bearing cap bolts and Ford doesn't sell them so you'll need to make some from some 10.9 grade headbolts.

Like many modern Ford engines Ford considers the bottom end of the 1.0 ECOboost to be unserviceable. Therefore Ford does not supply internal parts, specifications and service information for the bottom end and the available information is quite limited.

In the USA however Ford once published some of the specifications and service information in the online ETIS workshop manual. This information however was removed after some time.

Regarding this information the bearing clearances for the 1.0 ECOboost engine should be:

Big end bearings: 0,02 mm to 0,05 mm
Main cap bearings: 0,03 mm to 0,06 mm

Big end bearings are usually available in 3 different sizes. Standard, 0,25 mm oversize and 0,50 mm oversize. To be able to use an oversize bearings the crankshaft needs to be machined to obtain the correct clearance.

Personally I prefer to check the clearances by measurements using bore gauges and micrometers. Plastigage is easy to use and gives an indication whether the bearing clearance is acceptable or not. It is however not nearly as accurate as performing actual measurements using decent measurement equipment.
