GEM question

Featured Replies

I have a Focus CC 2009 - would the GEM gizmo have control of the fogs lamps and reversing lamps. The fuses are ok but no power to reverse switch (the mirrors work ok - same fuse) and as for the fogs nothing at all front or rear or on the dash or power to the fuse.  I'm thinking master light switch but I don't want to crank up the parts cannon. Also as an aside the washer pump has retired - again good fuse with power but I will remove the arch liner and investigate that problem further.

All replies gratefully received, thanks.

Yes the control signal to the Fog lights, reverse lights and almost every other light (except high beam) is from the GEM.

So, I got myself another GEM (£60) and the problems remain the same - the replacement was an identical part number and was warranted by the seller. The car started and ran fine but the remote locking didn't join the party - so I put my original module back.

Since then I have come across the module beep test - hold the heated rear window switch on then turn on the ignition, release switch and the module will beep once. After that every time the module receives a command for the electricals it  oversees it beeps. Useful stuff. No response to the fog light or washer pump command - and that's where I'm at right now.

Still with no MOT - just because of these two lighting issues - the rest of the car is faultless test wise. The reverse lights don't work either but I can manage without for the time being.

I have managed to find the requisite wiring schematics online so investigations will continue.

Use FORScan and see what DTC's are stored.

Your replacement GEM unit would not work with the remote lock/unlock unless you reprogrammed your keys back in to the car.

Did you reload your own cars "AsBuilt" files in to the replacement GEM ?

It's what many Ford owners use including some Ford technicians.

might be as simple as a wobbly filament making the GEM switch off as its getting funny signals - that's how her Brake lights did it - follow the wise words above - diagnostic is a lot easier to follow than a potentially pointless glance at a wiring diagram

Right, so all fixed.

In the end it was one dummy and fuse 25 in the main relay/fuse headquarters in the engine bay - this 10a item feeds switching side of the ignition relay which feeds the non-GEM circuits? All working - fogs front and rear, reverse lamps and windscreen washer. So now I have a spare GEM but that's ok - I might need it for troubleshooting at some stage.

Foolishly I presumed ignition appertained powering up some of the engine management etc when the ignition is turned on - but when you pull the relay out and have a look at it it's 70a.

Anyway all done now - retest tomorrow.

Did the car start without the replacement GEM having to be programmed?

I have read on here that you can sometimes be lucky if the spec of the donor car is a close match.

Yes, the car started and ran fine - the only thing that didn't function was the remote locking - apparently the replacement GEM has to be programmed to your existing keys.

And the original faults remained - so clearly the GEM unit had no bearing on the lights and washer problem I was having.

I did look specifically for a unit with the same part number, though.

Hope this helps.

if you get a reasonable adapter (although so many brilliant ones available now worth splashing out a bit more...) you can use the Russian bods free stuff to save three config files  and write then back to a new module

That is useful to know. There was a near identical car to mine at my usual breakers a few months back. I would have had the GEM unit had I known. It will have been crushed with the car by now.
