What is this sound?

Featured Replies

I’m getting this sound, at least that’s when I notice it.. when I’m changing gear or upping my revs going uphill in gear 2 for example.

It comes from the front passengers side.

Sounds like turbo flutter - not sure of the technical explanation that goes with it. Usually heard or amplified with aftermarket induction kits or remaps etc

Assuming your car is standard I’m not sure why you’d be hearing it. Is all of the airbox and induction pipes connected up ok?

info on the web suggests you’ll hear this when the blow-off or recirc valve isn’t dumping boost when you’ve lifted off the accelerator

All completely standard, it’s a 2011 1.6 diesel.  I’ll have a check tomorrow and report back, thank you

It is turbo flutter.  Totally normal to hear it on this engine.  It's a VNT with no need for a recirc valve.

It's basically the turbo 'coughing' when the air supply is suddenly reduced.  Proper name is compressor stall.
