Mk1 wiper park position causing mot fail

Featured Replies

Hi, got a 02 1.6 focus ghia.

Bought it for next to nothing to keep me moving after another car was stolen a few yrs ago... Its now a spare car but love it too much to ever let it go. It's got very few miles on, I've had it welded and undersealed etc.

One thing that keeps popping up is the wipers do not automatically park low enough after use.. and in the eyes of a picky mot tester "obstruct vision". Both in intermittent and full modes.

They do cover the correct amount of the screen on swipe though.

You can however stop them manually out of view. By quickly adjusting the stalk... But again last year I had a mot tester that wasn't happy with that.. but then didn't notice it on retest after welding was completed 😂

With MOT coming up again, I'm wondering if there's a quick fix for this?

I feel like there should be a way to tell the car the wipers aren't returning low enough?

Thanks in advance

Have you removed the arms, ran the motor then stopped it and refitted the arms in the right place?

Wiper parking is controlled by a switch inside the motor. I don't know whether that's adjustable.

I think they use a relay for park had same a few years back

This was a common issue on the 306s back in my Peugeots days.  Would just fit a good used motor for about £10-£15.  I suspect they're more expensive now though.  And the Mk1 Focus may not use the same system as most of the 306s had autowipers from 1999 onwards.

Take the Motor apart and have a look.

With any I've taken apart there is a permanent Live to to a contact on a Wheel that has a blank bit, when you switch off the Motor will continue until it reaches the blank bit, then stop because there is no power going to the Motor when that happens.

More modern ones may be different.

Try letting the wipers park and then remove and refit the wiper arms so they’re where you want them.

Might be as simple as that without having to start stripping the motor assembly down.

Just check the wipers still sweep enough of the screen area. In theory offsetting the park position you’ll also reduce the furthest position they sweep to as the spindles always rotate a fixed amount.

I think it's the right idea though👍

I'd certainly be trying that first

And after all that, he's just a OPW, hasn't been back since.
