Intermittent Clutch Issue

Featured Replies

Hi all! I just wanted to ask if anyone has an answer to this issue which I have seen other people mention on other forums. I have a 2017 1.5ecoboost ST Line, done around 45k. Recently had problem that sometimes when I park the clutch doesn’t return back up. Easily solved with quick flick of foot under the clutch. Also recently it sometimes feels ‘sticky’ when changing gear as the clutch is disengaging (I believe). Sometimes it’s fine sometimes it happens and goes away. Once I was in start stop traffic and was changing into 1st and the clutch wouldn’t come back up, I had to pull it up hard with my foot. Only time it’s stayed down when normal driving otherwise it’s only happened with parking. I sh@t myself - very scary as I was on motorway. Anyway have taken to local garage who changed master cylinder. On the drive home seemed ok but time will tell. Has anyone else had this issue and had it resolved?

Sorry - thank you in advance for any help / suggestions etc

Quick update regarding clutch pedal staying down, seems to happen particularly after using reverse gear eg reverse into drive or parking space take car out of reverse to park (no gear selected) - let clutch up - sticks at bottom of travel

posted about this before - we now have wimps driving that need a light clutch - to do that we have to have a lot of travel - that causes the diaphragm spring to work close to its limits (that dished spring is the bit that clamps the plate allowing drive from the engine to reach the wheels).  With a bit of wear the spring can go over centre and the pedal gets stuck down....

I guess parking is when the driver has more focus on operating the clutch (hence most often gets pushed to the floor - rather than a lazy driver wearing the car out)

in this clip as it pops at the very end.... imagine it doesn't pop back - that's why the pedal stays on the floor - last round no one came back to confirm if it loses drive in this condition...    if it still drives (but now you can't stop without stalling) it would likely be insufficient travel due to a different fault

Thank you for your reply Botus! I can see a few threads online about similar issues with Focus’ and Fiesta’s but nothing definitive about the fix. I’ve had the master changed, the spring behind the pedal seems ok - garage say new slave / clutch next. Expensive way to try and get a solution. Can confirm problem with pedal sticking to floor is definitely more prevalent after having used reverse gear - pedal is more ‘sticky’ when using forward gears. Am also keeping eye on brake fluid levels incase of leak.

its the worn centre plate - always has been - most people have forgotten how stuff works

if you think about your point it happens mostly in reverse - likely you want to look over your shoulder so push with your foot to help you turn your head and shoulders....

you should be able to replicate with the engine off and the car parked.... its quite normal cars have been doing this for 50 years

It’s only done this (pedal staying stuck at bottom of travel) while in gear a couple of times - both times when engaging first gear - yes it has felt like the gear is engaged (the car moves) but feels like it’s not fully engaged. One time I managed to get the pedal up while in gear, other time I put the car in neutral - pulled the pedal up with my foot and then put it in first again and it worked fine. The other times it tends to stay stuck at bottom is when coming out of gear - putting car in neutral (again seems to happen more if I have just used reverse). Other main symptom is the pedal sticking sometimes near top of travel (I assume disegnaging) while in gear. Will ask garage to look at the centre plate as you mentioned - thank you

I guess with the clutch inside out some part is up against the flywheel - so it gets some drive

centre plate = clutch plate = usually can't see unless the whole gearbox is out = 500 quid

I see… same as what I have seen regarding changing or inspecting slave cylinder then - which then led me to looking at replacing clutch - dual mass fly wheel and slave cylinder - as the labour is the same in getting to all of that. I have been quoted £1,200 for clutch, dmfw and slave cylinder - does that sound reasonable?

Ford Dual Mass flywheels are terribly unreliable - you "must" have one as its really a crankshaft vibration damper - designed to save the engine self destructing and sending unpleasant NVH around the entire driveline increasing wear and tear and irritating occupants.  Lots of fools have replaced with a solid one, damaged the car and find it unpleasant to operate afterwards

cost wise DMF are far more expensive and the more you replace the more the costs go up - if the mileage is after 60 K miles and its not an ecoboom throw the vehicle away model, probably worth going with OEM or if out there better quality from a big supplier and doing everything

if ecoboom and needs a clutch too you should probably take a brave pill and throw it on a skip where it belongs - an interim solution put something under the carpet beneath the clutch pedal and drive it till it dies

It’s a 1.5 petrol ecoboost / boom. I’ve been told they don’t have the wet belt. It’s done 45k of which I have done 35k, very late 2017 model. I really like the car - does the job and was hoping to keep it for another couple of years, aside from this issue it’s been tip top

my sisters was OK till the clutch slip software update - issues post the clutch abuse test - that's to see if they will give u a free clutch.  When I next drove it - seemed to have made the clutch travel far stiffer and much shorter.  It was also like it was stuck in treacle - NONE of that is possible, you can't do that in software - but its how the vehicle was when i next drove it

I'd have been back for a free clutch, she carried on till this a mega misfire 6 months on - when I diagnosed, the MAF sensor was coming up - some anecdotal evidence on the internerd said Ford made cyl 2 go full open injector in this circumstance to make the fuel smell and the missfire big time (it was certainly doing that) - Sadly it had just closed, but she has an EPC 2 miles away with one in stock at £40 - with just 5 mins to fit it - rather than trying that, she instead threw the entire car worth 10k in a skip

a bit like her fabia, needed a paper clip solder job on the ABS link wires - so she threw that one away too....  you can't tell them they know best
