Does the water pump need changing with the timing belt?

Featured Replies

I've just been to my local Ford dealership to book a service, and it needs a new timing belt. (2009 S-Max Titanium TDCi 143 1997 cc)

They've told me that when I have the timing belt changed (about £400+) I also need to have the water pump changed (another £400).

The quote of £880.13 seems very high. Does the water pump HAVE to be changed at the same time? It's almost more than the car is worth. The car behind the service desk was adamant it was necessary.

Thanks in advance,

Steve

Are you:

(a) Crazy

(b) A secret millionaire ?

Who takes a 2009 (15 year old) car to a Ford main dealer for a service and a timing belt change ? 🤔

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Take it to a local independent garage (does not have to be a Ford specialist)

Service about £150 to £200 depending what needs done.

Timing belt change including water pump £450

I would do the waterpump as well but i would not uses ford plenty of independ garages around

If you have to change a cam belt I WOULD ALWAYS change the water pump unless you know for certain that the pump is almost new.

Having done a couple of cambelts on an S-Max's it is not an easy job. (half the engine sits under the front scuttle panel and all has to come off)

If you buy a new cambelt buy a cambet kit because it contains any idlers and the tensioner and possibly some bolts.

When buying a new cambelt and water pump If you can afford it buy OEM parts but as I said they are expensive, alternately the are quite a good few manufactures that make spares to OEM standards. And dont forget to buy 5 litres of Good Quality Antifreeze and mix at 50/50%

Only as a guide ONLY a cambelt kit & water pump will cost around (please dont quote me on it) £150.  And Antifreeze £20
