Sump removal - stuck on silicon

Featured Replies

Hi all,

I have finally managed to remove everything prior to dropping the sump off, I’m confident I’ve removed all bolts but the thing just won’t budge. I can see a generous amount of sealant was used which is probably why it’s got such a good bond. I don’t want to use a screwdriver and damage anything. Does anyone have any tips?

secondly I noticed this small gap between the sump and bell housing which looks like damage and like it needs repairing? If that is the case, other than replacing the damaged part is there any possible patch up job? Weld?

thanks all

The position you show isn't damaged. In fact it's the position you use to lever the sump off.

Use as large a flat blade screwdriver as will fit.

Are you sure you've removed all the bolts, not just the ones around the sump flange?

Looks like a 1.0 Ecoboost sump? - have you removed the axial bolts shown in the photo?

Thanks for the reply ray and good spot yes it is a 1.0 eco boost sorry I should’ve stayed that.

Good to know that’s a pry point so I’ll give it another go. I think I’m being too cautious and just need to give it more encouragement. The two bolts seen in the picture are removed yeah, I’ve tripled checked and I think they’re all removed. I haven’t been able to get the air con pump off though so was wondering if that disguised any other bolts but I think they’re all off. I’ll give it another go in a min.

IIRC there are three axial bolts (not just the two shown).

Pump also has three long bolts. It has hollow location dowels so may have a little corrosion present and just need a bit of leverage 'encouragement'.

Ps. It doesn't matter how much silicone there appears to be; it will be the same (minimal) thickness between the flange faces however much has been used.

I just had another go and could pry up one of the corners a bit but even with a nice bit of encouragement it doesn’t want to keep coming so I wonder if there is a bolt I’m missing. I can’t see any on the left side at all.
there is one around the drive shaft but I don’t think that’s related. I’ve attached some pictures of a few remaining bolts and would be good to get your thoughts on these.

thanks again

Does this bolt need to come out?

Further update

have managed to get the sump off but the very annoying air con pump wiring loom is driving me mad. It’s on a weird plastic clip that doesn’t seem to have any logical way of getting it off and I don’t want to break it. Does anyone know how this is meant to come off?

It's not meant to come off.  Has single use plastic fir tree clips with cable ties on them.  Either lever the fir clips out of the pump or cut the cable ties.  Or if you're not replacing the pump, just hang it in situ using rope or bungee cord.

Thanks Tom, one of the ac bolts snapped in the sump though so I can’t remove the ac pump to let it hang freely, any ideas?

The white plastic should be on a fir-tree clip.  Lever it out with a flat blade screwdriver or something.  You can see other black clips on the left hand side of the picture as well.  They'll need removing as well.

Thanks Tom, have managed to get the left ones off but the weird clip on the right I’m having no joy with at all. It’s really difficult to see how that comes off any ideas for this clip? Thanks again for your help

I haven't got any better ideas unfortunately.  If you've got a small mirror, maybe see if there's a bolt holding it on from the side we can't see?

Ultimately plastic can't be welded to the metal casing of the pump, so it can only be bolted on or pushed in on a plastic fir tree.

Looking again, the third option is that it's designed to slide 'downwards' off of that clip, which obviously isn't possible when it's stuck to the sump.

Maybe taking a step back, if you have removed two of the a/c pump bolts and the third has snapped you should be able to separate your now lowered sump from the pump.

There is nothing else holding it on apart from corrosion at the joining faces/location dowels/remnant of the bolt.

Use penetrating fluid around the bolt positions, give it a few well placed taps around the flange at those positions, find somewhere to lever/force the two apart without damaging any wires or connectors.

If you can't get enough leverage with it all loose, temporarily rebolt the sump to the block.

My advice would be don't risk damaging the connector if you don't need to
