Pistons

Featured Replies

I've got to replace my pistons on my 2009 focus 1.8tdci but I don't know what the best option is as I don't know what the oem brand is because I would rather go oem but there are cheaper options I'm just in uncharted territory so any thoughts would be helpful.

Cheers.

Maybe ask a local (to You) motor factor

such a huge unpleasant job that you don't want to play up again - so need at least as good a OEM Ford.

people seem to misunderstand the stress a piston goes through - budget, fakes are us is a terrible idea... there might well be better - but you need to ensure that's what you buy if you don't go factory and won't be cheap

motofactor's mostly sell junk to pikey's for use on some mug customer they don't care about - and these days the prices are getting stupid too

What's happened to them?  I've never seen a 1.8 TDCI blow a piston so far.

Crankshaft bolt backed out and pistons slammed into valves that's why they need replacing

Ah, fair enough.  So a full rebuild needed?  I'd probably have just fitted a complete good used engine in that case.  Are the bores ok or will they need to be honed out?

Parts catalogue lists two options for pistons but doesn't specify the difference between them.

Grade A - 1436606
Grade B - 1513923

I haven't been able to confirm the OEM brand unfortunately.  It might be worth checking prices with Ford.

Everything was fine apart from the cylinder head cam and pistons and it's pistons that are the last piece of the puzzle before I can start reassembly

That only leaves the block, crank and rods?  I'd also be concerned about the rods bending if the pistons are damaged.

At least you can stick to original sized pistons if the bores don't need honing.

It might be worth contacting one or two engine builders to see which brand they use.  If they're offering warranty on their own rebuilds they'll need to be using decent quality parts.  I'm seeing Yenmak on a couple of well known engine builders sales pages but have no personal experience with them.

Are Hepolite any good? I used them many years ago on a motorcycle engine.

There's a name from the past! Hadn't realised they were still going. All seems to be bike stuff on that site, though, can't see any Focus bits.

You've probably triggered another nostalgia-fest there, Mike.
