hi all

thanks for the Welcome, i am going to pick up a 2017 ST-Line 1.5 Diesel Automatic with circa 120 bhp are they really gutless is it going to pull ok? i dont want a really slow one buty its such a lovely looking car randomly though no rear electric windows is that normal or are they not as high spec as Titanium X please reply as I dont wanna get it if its slower than a mountain bike!!

1.5 120 PS TDCi auto is actually better than the manual

Torque is 300NM on the manual 330NM on the auto as the manual gearbox has a torque limiter due to it being weak

Just make sure the service history is up to date, especially for the gearbox if it's over 36,000 miles and ensure the battery is kept in tip top condition as Powershifts do not like low voltage.

Yes, ST-Lines are Zetec spec so no rear electric windows as standard

Really!! low spec then, so Titanium X would be a better buy spec wise

Titanium X is the top comfort spec.  If you want the looks you'd have to go for ST-Line X instead.

One man's rocketship is another man's snail so it really would be a good idea to drive before you buy.

Test review of the manual which bears out Dave's comments re: the auto being preferable in this case:

https://www.autocar.co.uk/car-review/ford/focus-2014-2018/first-drives/2016-ford-focus-15-tdci-st-line-first-drive

ST-Line majors on the sporty look, Titanium more on equipment especially the Titanium X, but an ST-Line X covers both bases to some extent.

You probably won't ever want to go out of "D"

"D" changes gear early(ish) to balance performance and economy (between 1,500 & 2,500 RPM)

"S" holds the gears longer, which never makes sense on a Diesel (between 2,500 & 4,000 RPM) it gets very annoying

You pull the paddles to go into manual mode.

If you enter manual mode in "D" it will revert back to auto after 5 seconds (of not touching the paddles)

If you enter manual mode in "S" it will not change gear until you tell it to.

so it has kinda paddle shift

Yes, ST-Line autos have paddle shifters only

All other models have an up/down switch on the gearstick

Is this with reference to the Focus Mk3.5 ?

My Focus Mk4 Titanium X Auto has paddle shifters.

Yes,

All early MK4s had paddles, then they took them off except ST-Line and ST

Seems to be a bit of a trend.

Going off topic a bit, but I note that MINI have not only removed the manual gearbox option, but deleted the paddles on the auto unless you pay extra for a Sport version. And the gear selector is a little switch on the dash just like the EV.

It's probably to prevent ignorant humans interfering with their carefully devised algorithms, but as they've also hidden the exhausts on the ICE cars, you might think they're trying to push you into an EV.........
