MOT

Featured Replies

my car passed its mot today but I have these advisories, sounds expensive

Advisory notice item(s)
  • Offside Rear Brake hose slightly deteriorated (1.1.12 (b) (ii))
  • Nearside Rear Brake hose slightly deteriorated (1.1.12 (b) (ii))
  • Oil leak, but not excessive (8.4.1 (a) (i))

Brake hoses are only the short rubber bits at the wheel end.  Cheap and easy to replace.  £10 each for aftermarket.  An hours labour.  Plus a bit of brake fluid.

Wouldn't worry about the oil leak unless it's dripping on the floor.

I'd be quite happy with that - it's a result! 😁

That is assuming that the brake bleeder screws are not seized.

If they snap off or strip their threads when turned, it could mean the cylinders or calipers have to be replaced.

The unions connecting the steel brake lines to the flexible hoses are also prone to breaking if corroded.

I've had advisories like these in the past. Chance are in a year's time at a different garage it will pass with no advisories.

Certainly the minor oil leak from the back of my engine appeared one year but not the next two years.

We should all follow that sensible advice!

True.  But a decent garage should know how to tackle them.  Wire brush, penetrating fluid, and if it's cold outside, warm them up as well.

A mechanic showed me a neat trick for bleeding a caliper through the hose after I snapped a nipple many years ago.  If was surprisingly effective and saved having to replace the caliper.

If the union has rusted solid on the metal pipe, it only takes a couple of minutes to cut it off, flare the end and make up a short copper section.

I would recommend leaving this job to a garage unless an experienced DIY'er with with all the kit.

Can you tell us more Tom.

Push the piston out as far as possible.  Pre-fill the caliper & piston through the hose hole.  Then just loosely fit the hose on top.

When the pedal is pressed, any air left in the pipe gets pushed out past the hose connection.  Then push the piston back, forcing air out of the caliper.  Tighten it fully when you only get clean fluid coming out of there.

thank you everyone for your great advise as always

If you are able, post photos of the hoses. Opinions of what is "deteriorated" are subjective.

As far as I know, the test centres usually put something down as an advisory. They can be investigated if too many vehicles pass with no advisories.
