Headache of an issue with 2005 Mk2 Focus

Featured Replies

Okay so forgive me for any frustration, this problems been ongoing for several months and I feel like I’ve typed this issue up a million times to a million different people and nobody has been able to help me.

a few years ago, I had a cluster issue, seemed to go into limp mode a lot, a good tap on the dials and it would go away.

spoke to an expert in this area who told me that the cluster needed resoldering. He eventually met me and did this for me.

car drives fine for the next few years.

Flash forward to September, I ended up quite unwell and the car was parked for approx two weeks. Upon restarting the car, it started first time however, it went straight into limp mode.

I let the engine warm up, turned off, waited a few minutes then restarted engine, limp mode went away. - proceeded to set off and it came straight back on, I had to crawl home.

so I started looking into it, cleared and replaced spark plugs and chamber, no water here. Bought the Volvo head cover just incase.

replaced washer jets with upgraded ones just incase, ignition leads etc.

I bought forscan for my laptop and it threw up some error codes: P2108, P2176, P2135

i was then told this looked more like a battery error, so I replaced the battery and the problem is still there.

Where I stand now:

the limp mode typically only happens on a cold start if the engine has been off for more than a few hours.

it’s worse when it’s rained or moist/cold outside, even if the cars just been stood there.

ive never had an issue on a warm start ever.

I should also note I’ve owned this car for years, and since I bought it, sometimes it would have an issue on start where it just wouldn’t ignite, it would crank fine and healthy but would take 3x to start - I was told this could be the position sensor but it never really bothered me so I never got around to replacing it.

if anyone could help me that’d be great I’m at my wits end and I really can’t afford a new car at the moment

If you clear the Codes and they only come back when you have a cold start problem then they relate to the Throttle Body Assembly on the Engine.

It could also be a Wiring or PCM problem relating to the Throttle.

How could I go about identifying this? I’m happy to purchase a new throttle body if that resolves the issue but they aren’t cheap, is there any way to identify that the issue is there and not wiring before I start spending money?

Apologies, I don’t have a clue when it comes to electrics

There isn't an easy way. There will be plenty of PID's in FORScan for the Throttle and Accelerator Pedal that you could Live Monitor but that might not mean anything to you.

The first thing you should do is to note then clear all Fault Codes and see if they come back both before the car does not start again and after. The Codes you quoted may have been historical ones.

You may be able to buy a cheap used Throttle Body, have a look on the usual auction sites, it may need to be reset after fitting though, I'm not sure.

If you state what Engine you have you may get a better response on this Forum.

i believe the KAM memory needs to be reset but unplugging battery for 30 minutes should do that, I think I’ll just have to bite the bullet and replace the throttle body in hopes it resolves the issue

I think you will be right about the Throttle Body. As the OP said the issue occurred this time after the car had been standing a few weeks.

For the KAM you might find there’s a fuse for this, to save the extra faffing of resetting the one-touch windows and possibly radio codes after a battery disconnect.

Its fuse 26 in the engine bay on my mk2.5 ST for example
