MK1 Reverse Light.

Featured Replies

I'm sure every mk1 owner, knows the reverse light is blasted with road mess and never lasts very long before either the bulb or holder blows. Thankfully on mine the connector is always ok. At least they got that right.
Its clearly a dumb idea to mastic the holder in place. BAD IDEA.

I was thinking how about a boot to cover the back of the lens / holder and partly up the cable.  That would protect the connect and bulb holder.

Its just an idea. I do not have the means to make a rubber or plastic boot.  I might try a food bag with a cable tie around the cable and may be a soft water proof, mastic type gue to hold it to the back of the lens.  I would think a mastic which does not dry or harden, I know there are some, I do not know the names.

Would anyone else like to make suggestions , comments etc.

Not having a Mk1, I have no direct experience of the issue, though a food bag does sound a bit flimsy as a solution. I think a sturdy 'balloon' like the material a whoopee cushion is made of may be more sturdy.

Is this a swimmingly good idea ?

Agreed a balloon is an excellent idea.  The problem is attaching the gue. I don't think a setting mastic is good. At some point, it will need to be removed. I know there are mastics, which stick like crazy and stay softish, which should make it easy to remove when things do need to be changed. Sadly, I cant remember the names of those gue. Ive used them in work a long time ago.

All ideas and suggestions are welcome.

Thanks a balloon is much better than a food bag.

Please keep the ideas coming, may be we can solve the problem of a never working reverse light 🙂

Thanks for your suggestions.
Both the swimming hat and ballon are excellent.

I think I've solved the problem of how to attach it.

"Butyl Sealant Tape NFRC Class A Certified Mastic Sticky"

From memory, its a very sticky tape, like a mastic, but it never sets or goes hard.  I seem to remember using something like this to seal the plastic sheet on the inside of car doors.
These might just work.
If they do, that will hopefully help with the always-broken reverse light.
As much as both my wife and I love our Focus, sometimes Ford do some really dumb things. Putting electrics in the direct blast from the rear wheel definitely fits in the dumb idea category 🙂

Yippeee.

Thanks again.
