A few questions about my 2005 focus

Featured Replies

So I got this one when my 2006 ford focus flexifuel's engine totally died in the middle of the road. The motor was stuck and needed to be replaced. As it was also leaking water through the broken roof window (a broken cog wheel but closed as well as I could) and a bunch of other tiny problems.

I checked for another and found a one year older one that didn't look as nice (the old one had leather seats, so much more powerful motor..) but with a working motor lol.. for the same price as the motor would have cost. 20000 sek about 2000 euro. As I'm still driving it three years later I guess I should be happy at the price, but there are problems..

First, is this car the ones called MK2?

In no order at all..

1. I've had problems opening the tailgate for a few months and finally I removed the rubber when I couldn't get it open again and a metal bit (bent copper connector with what might be sticky glue on the middle?) fell out. I can't really see very well and tip's are welcome. I don't mind playing with electronics but I'd really like to see images of what it's supposed to look like (and work) - this needs fixing now!

2. The lid of the front tray can't be closed, not that it matters, but if someone has a trick (I keep it shut by wedging in a piece of paper so I can't use it)

3. The motor light turns red as soon as the temperature goes above maybe 15C - I've had my local mechanic pick the motor apart without solving this so I'm just ignoring it now🙂

4. The "plastic" triangle in front of the driver door (left) was very loose so I removed it. One of the three fasteners is broken and the other two looks like they wouldn't mind being replaced either. Just esthetics but a bit noisy too

5. The keys don't fit the locks, they only fit the ignition. The first winter there was a too long time I didn't use the car, I was sick.., and when I tried to unlock it the battery was dead. Finally I asked the local mechanic for help and they broke into the car (there are marks, I think they bent the door to reach the unlock.. disappointing but I could use the car at least). I then got a bigger battery and I'm really careful not to discharge the battery. I'd like to fix this though. Not really a thing you test when buying a car with electronic locks I guess 😮

6. the right headlight is dead so needs fixing

7. I think the last few days the air won't get heated, at least not with the ac on. I guess the thingy that heats the air might be broken (or shorted from all the winter moisture)

8. the back breaks needs replacing (just to sum it all up, I won't replace those myself) - Needs to be done before the car inspection which needs to be done before the end of January not to get a driving ban.

Maybe it'll be cheaper just to buy a new old car ;D

The reason why I started googling the car was really that I was looking for ways to play with the canbus. Get and send data. Hack this old thing 😄 It would be cool to make a program that starts the window heat and if possible the ac heat with settings when it's below a certain temperature for example. And to monitor the battery would really be useful with the key problem.. But generally I'd just like to play around with it and read all the data.. and logs.. would be useful with the motor lamp problem too. I guess that's why I ended up writing this mega-long post lol. Thanks for reading!

I stream stuff on twitch (https://www.twitch.tv/fixit42) if anyone has questions or tips and prefer chatting to typing here 🙂 There's also a link to my discord there

Thanks a million! ❤️

I certainly hope you got the car very cheap, most here would have walked away from a vehicle with such issues. There is a computer analysis program called ForScan which you can download for free on a windows computer, and with the appropriate cable, connect it to the OBD port.

The 'temperature' settings you mention are what many cars call, ''climate control', never seen a mod on a Mk2 to have it though.

Here's a thread describing the correct connector cable for the OBD port...
