Must admit I hated the whole concept of the Walkman, and every variant since that which involves covering your ears with sound excluding your awareness of your surroundings! Even now, I hate to see folk walking around immersed in music from their phones. Oblivious to the many dangers in their vicinity.

Guess growing up in Belfast heightened me to always be aware of what was going on around you, whether it was the sounds of an unfriendly gang approaching, or a car screeching tires often up to no good.

I genuinely can't understand the popularity of cutting yourself off from what's going on in your own environment. Yes, I now I'm in an extreme minority...

    Only point of wearing headphones is to cut yourself off - as in an noisy, open plan office......

    ....or living next to me when I'm running my HB1s at high power !
