Focus MK3 all of a sudden cutout whilst driving

Featured Replies

MK3 focus 1.6 petrol hatchback 80k miles

Driving this evening 70mph the car all of a sudden cut out and slowly came to a stop!

Thankfully it was quite quiet on the roads!

ABS and traction control light came on and the driver side dipped beam blew the bulb!

Was prompted by the dash to put my foot on the pedal and the car came back to life using the start button and no warnings on the dash.

H7 bulb replaced all seems fine so far.

Has anyone come across this before, any ideas what would cause this?

Could be many causes.

Injectors, bad fuel, fuel pump, high pressure pump, electric issue anything.

It should be diagnosed to check any error codes.

So, what do you have, a 2004 Mk1, or a Mk3?

I've got a mk1 and a MK3 🙂

If there's not enough space in your profile you could always add your second vehicle to your sig as I have done.

Think I found the possible cause as to why the vehicle may have cut out, due to possible water ingress as the plastic housing for the PCM is warped/broken which has exposed the PCM.

What a ridiculous place to position the PCM right near the wheel arch liner, what were the engineers thinking!?

Has anyone come across this before, It appears to be a common issue.

Other than replacing the housing is there anything I can do to ensure it doesn't warp again.

I was thinking of using cable ties and silicone adhesive to reinforce the housing...

Has the car taken a knock in that corner?  Looks like there are some cracks in the top of the box but they might just be moulding lines.

The PCM was fitted there on the Mk2 as well.  Rarely a problem unless the car had an impact in that area.  Everything gets wet under the bonnet so as soon as the casing is open, it doesn't really matter where it's fitted, it'll suffer from damp and corrosion regardless.

Cable ties would be worse for warping as they focus the pressure just in very specific areas instead of spreading the load around the whole box.  And I don't think silicone would do anything on a new box.  The box needs to be tightly sealed, no gap for silicone to fit between the two halves.

There may be another option that I haven't considered, but for now the best option seems to be just replacing the box.
