Tyre pressures

Featured Replies

Happy New Year, everyone.

I found out that my car has 205/60R16 tyres ; a warning sign has come up and suggested that my pressure/s is/are low.  I checked my handbook and it suggests that the pressure/s should be 38. I am amazed at that. Is it ( 38) correct, please?

As well as that I can't believe my Ford Focus, being a Titanium is clever enough to say which one/s is/are low. With this in mind, it's best that I check them all, to determine which one's lower than it should be. Would you also agree with my assumption?

Thanks in advance.

Martin.

Yes...

Providing the information in your profile is correct and you do have a 2022 Focus then yes the tyre pressure will be 38psi, and yes your car will know which wheel has a low pressure. Look in the display of vehicle information TPMS

See page 426 of Focus Owners Handbook: image.thumb.png.5083a25a62822204bf5d724a6bb46095.png

Also check the Sticker in the Door Pillar for the correct Tyre size and Pressure.

Thank you. Yes I have a focus 2020 Titanium. My son has a Focus ST Line 2022.

TPMS ? What does that mean please. I'm going to hazard a guess and say Tyre Pressure Management System? Sorry for my ignorance.

Here is a copy of what is in the Handbook.

Are you sure that the Pressure should be 38 psi, mine is but I have 196/65R16 Tyres. I thought the 205/60R16 ones were 33 psi. The Door Pillar Sticker should clarify.

Your vehicle has a tire pressure monitoring system. A warning lamp illuminates when one or more of the tires are significantly below the correct tire pressure. If the warning lamp illuminates, stop your vehicle as soon as it is safe to do so, check the tires and inflate them to the correct tire pressure.
Note:   After you inflate the tires to the correct pressure, the system may not immediately respond to the air added to the tires.
You can view the tire pressures in the information display.

Tire Pressure Monitoring System Screen

To view the tire pressures, use the information display controls on the steering wheel to select the following:

Menu item   Action
Settings
Press the menu button.
Information
Press the OK button.
Tire Pressure
Press the OK button.

You must reset the tire pressure monitoring system after each tire replacement or after inflating the tires to the correct tire pressure.   See   Resetting the Tire Pressure Monitoring System

Driving on under inflated tires can:

  • Cause them to overheat.
  • Lead to tire failure.
  • Reduce fuel efficiency.
  • Reduced tire life.
  • Affect vehicle handling or stopping ability.

Good Luck 😀 👍

TPMS - tyre pressure monitoring system (or sensor)

a legal requirement from 2012 - cars must have a way to inform the driver if a tyre pressure is low...

VAG went with budget fake it from ABS wheel speed readings

2016 aim was another upgrade to outlaw that rubbish and have real sensors in each wheel (that actually do temp and pressure - but they don't bother to help with the temp info to warn when too hot - its just to fiddle the readings to make you think they don't really fluctuate with temperature)

VAG cried to the EU that whilst real sensors would be a good idea, as Germans are stupid, and the accountants are criminals, they wanted the law watered down... so junk ABS idea is still permitted

Thanks .

I went out to check , in the dark, but had sadly left the car in the wrong position i.e the drivers door pillar sticker opens onto the road traffic. There are mad folk out there and for my safety I will have a look in the morning and deal with it safely, then. As I was leaving the dash came up with psi's  the 2 fronts are 25 , 25; the rear are 26 ( kerb side ) and 25 (off side). Tomorrow I will check what the pillar sticker says . Thanks for the moment

Those seem very low pressures, although it is very cold at the moment. The very least I'd of expected would be 32 but probably higher. At least you can have a look and see what the correct pressure is for your tyres. Remember to reset the TPMS after inflating the tyres.

If you go into the Dashboard Menu you should be able to see the Pressure readings for each Tyre.

They will be one or two psi higher than they are now because they would have been what was recorded when the car was switched off. You need to drive the car for a minute or so for the Sensors to wake up and give a current reading.

When you fill the Tyres up to the correct Pressures then it would be a good idea to do as @unofixsays and Reset the System as per the following instructions because it may not have been set properly before you got the car. Once done correctly you won't need to do that again though.

Resetting the Tire Pressure Monitoring System

Only reset the system after inflating the tires to the correct tire pressure.
To reset the tire pressure monitoring system, use the information display controls on the steering wheel to select the following:

Menu item   Action
Settings
Press the menu button.
Information
Press the OK button.
Tire Pressure
Press the OK button.
Reset
Press and hold the OK button until the system reset confirmation appears.

Thanks a lot. I know when I tried to press the settings button on the steering wheel it wouldn't depress. I kept on trying , without success. Lets see how I get on in the morning. I might seek help though as I don't appear to be a capable enough individual. Thanks for putting up with me

I took a picture of the sticker as advised. It shows 38. Again I feel that's rather high but is in keeping with what other searches advised , too.

I will inflate them all and hope that I am able to reset the TPMS. I might have to see if I can do that successfully. ( I shall follow the steps that Tizer sent/ advised and see how I get on) If not I shall try and seek help.

Thanks everyone for all your replies. I am grateful to you all

Ford Focus Owners Handbook, page 426 also says it is 38psi

Thanks indeed. When I finished them all ,the inflator I was using confirmed they were 38 . Then with the car still running the figures confirmed that only 2 were 38 and 2 were 37. I kept on trying. one became 39 and even though I released some air by using the edge of my finger nail I couldn't get it to come down. I gave up and decided to return to the task, tomorrow. Until they all tally I won't attempt to reset the Tpms. It's got dark out there too and it's become a race track out there too.

Take Care and Stay Safe everyone.

Don't worry about a couple of PSI difference showing on the display.

Thanks for your advice. Much appreciated. I will see what happens tomorrow

you are all light weights - her indoors has been driving hers with 17 psi in the right front...  funny how I have to notice and then I have to pump it up

whilst we're not allowed to be sexist - my sister is just the same, I drive for 2 hours to see her for the first time in 5 months and seconds after parking up - I spot her right front rim is almost on the ground... why should she know, she only walks 2 foot from it as she drives the thing everyday...
