Battery

though 1 bar and it will be fully charged

After it seems to show 'charged' it needs to remain on charge for 12 hours. Modern battery chargers are fooling people in to believing the battery is fully charged by displaying what appears to be 'battery full'. It actually is showing that the voltage of the battery has levelled out and is no longer increasing.

Back in the days when a battery charger had an Amp meter you could watch the charging current decrease as the battery state of charge approached 100% Unfortunately new chargers don't display the current, but instead display the charging voltage.

id go for a new battery, once they start causing issues, especially after 4 years, i'd replace it, you could try recharging it but at that age, I wouldnt trust it

Yes I agree, for the sake of £100 and hopefully trouble free miles for a few years

There shouldn't be anything plugged directly into the battery.  It's probably just clipped or stuck on somehow.  If you can post a picture I'm sure one of us can confirm what it is.

Sorry the pictures not too clear, the white top rectangle has, what looks like a rusty plug at the bottom right, I thought it went into the battery, but a second look for the photo, I think it's one unit from the negative terminal clamp, I'm an old timer, I only know the positive and negative clamp set up, when life was simpler.

Yes, that is the BMS sensor.  It is just part of the negative terminal.

I've just watched a you tube video, replacing a battery on a MK4 Ford Focus, they removed the air filter, is that necessary

Absolutely necessary. You will have no chance of getting the battery out and back in with the air filter in place.
