I'm afraid that doesn't make any sense at all.  The beam is lowered by moving to 4, that should give you less light ahead as it's angled downwards.  It sounds like your switch is working in reverse if 4 gives you more distant light than 0.  You can test this by parking close to a wall and watching the headlight cut-off as you change the setting.

The only reason to use 4 is if you've put a very heavy load in the boot.  That makes the rear end drop, and the front end then point upwards.  The beams pointing upwards is what dazzles other drivers.  So the switch is then moved to 4 to lower the beam back to the floor again.

No Tom, it’s not the switch that's in reverse, it’s me! 😳

How embarrassing, I was visualizing the knob assuming that the ‘clockwise’ direction was taking the setting up to the number 4 position and anticlockwise back down to 0. When it’s the other way around. What a fool I am sometimes! However, in practice when I was driving the car on unlit roads, I was lengthening the beam (whichever direction or number setting that was?) so I could see further ahead - I could see the beam rise and fall when operating the knob in any given direction.

My ridiculous brain was in ‘train set transformer’ mode -

Right = clockwise = increase = higher

Left = anticlockwise = decrease = lower

From now on I will be setting off on 0 and keeping it like that until such a time where I think I may be dazzling oncoming drivers, then move it towards >> 4 to compensate. Ha! even if I can’t see the road ahead!

I’m so sorry Tom, as I said you’ve been so patient

Much appreciated

My advice for you is to mount a couple of chandeliers to the bonnet of your Fez...all see you coming then 🤣🤣🤣
