Using 6l of oil as flushing oil, ok for 5- 10 mins at idle?

Featured Replies

Hello everyone I have a 2019 2l Ecoblue and would like to use 6l of engine oil as a kind of flushing oil for 10 mins or so because I have a really good price on this oil and want the engine to be tip top, question being is 6l enough to run it at idle for 10 mins because I thought they take like 6.4 litres, so would be near half a litre short of what the book say?

Is this 6 litres of the correct specification oil, or just 6 litres of a similar grade of oil ?

Thanks for your reply, it’s the same spec as requested by ford, to be fair it’s not that much more for 10 litres

If that  is the case, then personally I'd do a normal oil change of the full correct amount (6.4L) and then run the engine for a week, and then change it all again. True, that way you will use nearly 13L but at least the engine will have had a good clean.

Just don't expect your oil to still be golden in colour. Diesel engines can turn the oil black in less than an hour.

Thank you, the initial fill on this engine is 7.45 litres or similar apparently and the service fill is 6.4 litres so there’s always about a litre you can’t get out which annoys me a bit, I’ve only done about 1600 miles since the last oil change and was hoping to get the oil a little cleaner as even if you pour clean oil through whist the sump plug is open it goes black instantly once you start the engine as there still that almost litre of old oil still hiding in there somewhere

You will never get the oil in a diesel engine clean, it's just the nature of the engine.

Using this method on my Land Rover which is 20 years old the engine oil stays golden on the dip stick for about a thousand miles but I don’t think there is much room for left over oil to hide like there is in the eco blue engine if that makes sense, and it does have two oil filters as well

I won't mention using a can of engine flush before draining which I've done for over 20 years and found that Mondeo diesel was still clean inside at head off at 100 000 miles.

I know this is a Marmite thing (I love it) but agree diesel oil goes black very quickly.

I have looked at flushes and the only suitable one for this engine is called Forté new generation motor flush because it needs to be compatible with wet belts

Today I did a double engine oil flush on my 2l ecoblue, it’s been 1800 miles since my last oil change and I drained 700ml of old oil from the sump plug, added 700ml of forte new generation engine flush and left to idle for 30 mins, then i put an old t shirt on top of the drain pan to see what I’d catch whilst draining, the only thing was a tiny rubber fragment which i guess is from the wet belt (about 1/4 the size of an ant if that) so the belt will get changed this year.

then put a new oil filter (mann) and filled up the oil with MANNOL 0w30 ester extra, cheapest oil in spec I could find, ran for 10 minutes at idle and drained this, oil was still black

Then put another new filter on again and filled with Mobil 3000 formula f as before now the oil on the dip stick is clean after 20miles which never happened before, it was always black straight away

the engine does sound happier now and I’ll probably get some hate for using the flush but I even called forte to make sure it’s ok and there flush is absolutely fine with the wet belt according to them, but it’ll get swapped out for a new one this year anyway

Then again it's not their engine, and it's not them that are going to provide a warranty.

At the end of the day, it's your car and if you feel happier doing what you did then that's all that matters.

I don't know much (actually only the basic design) but this wet belt thing is very worrying and obviously needs to be changed at or before the recommended mileage/time at, what I see is great expense.
I think 100 000 miles/10 years for a dry belt and waterpump at £400 ish was pretty good when compared with that.

The wet belt is definitely a weird design, something that is not going to be very good on the wallet when I come to get it done. it’s weird how from 2021 ford say 5w30 for this engine but 0w30 before this, does anyone know the reasoning behind this?
