Engine swap

Featured Replies

Hi everyone I’ve got a 2014 1.0 eco boost  and the belt disintegration cause engine a turbo failure,I have 3 years left on finance and I want to put another engine in possible a 1.4 or 1.6 petrol ,is there anything I should look for and what are the compatible engines to look for as I don’t want another 1.0 eco boost engine in

thank you

If it’s on finance (I.e they own the car) I doubt the finance company would accept an engine swap.

And what model are we even talking about?

That would be just as difficult as putting an ST engine in.

Get yourself a used 1.0 engine, that you have seen running and took the sump off to check for belt degradation, then change the belts while it's out and fit that.

It will be cheaper and less hassle

You could also try complaining to the finance company and rejecting the vehicle as you have a right to expect longevity (providing you have serviced the car according to specifications)

Easier to comment if we knew what car you had, when purchased, when it failed, if full service history, etc. As Dave says, you may have rights against the selling dealer or finance company under consumer rights legislation.

But far simpler/cheaper to replace with an engine of the same type.

I’ve bought the car on finance 2 years ago and they offered me 1 year warranty, after that the engine management light came on last year in August and I’ve contacted the finance department and they’ve told me that the car is out of warranty and I need to take it to a specialist and have them checked that the problem was there when I bought the car,but I doubt that they can even prove that the problem was there as the car doesn’t have much service history.

and the other car donour car is the same model as mine just a few years older ,as I mentioned I don’t want to fix this 1.0 eco boost or replace it with another eco boost engine as it might brake down again a few months later on and have to spend money on ,and as I far I’m aware with the finance company don’t think they have much say in me swapping the engine with another one as this failed me

from the other car I will plan to take everything from engine ,transmission, whirring loom just wanted to know what might be the problems of me doing that step

thank you

Eric bloodaxe the is and 1.0 eco boost 2014

You can't just fit another engine, you'll need the transmission, shafts, exhaust, cooling system, front end harness and ECUs from the donor too, which will mean IP and, probably, cabin harness too

Which model?  Fiesta, Focus, etc?

DaveT70 that’s what I’m planning to do get everything from the other one and put all in mine ,and trying to forget about the pain of 1.0 eco boost engine ,my question is what engine would be suitable to fit in my car without occurring much headache

Either the 1.6 form a Ford focus 2011 plate or a 1.4 from Ford fiesta ?

Ok.  They never put a 1.4 petrol engine in that model.  So your only option would be the 1.6 Ti-VCT engine.  You would have to swap absolutely everything including the engine mounts, the wiring looms, the dash clocks etc.

Also I think you should check with the finance company.  As they do technically own the car until you finish paying for it.  You would also have to change the engine type on the logbook through the DVLA.  And declare an engine swap on your insurance.

TOMSFOCUS I appreciate the insight and where can I find that type of engine ,what models have it ,and yea I’m planning to let the finance people know about the change and change the engine displacement with DLVA ALSO as I have to keep the car for the next 3 years while still paying for it

thank you all again

Definately get a rear crashed 1.6 2014 petrol manual Focus then and swap EVERYTHING into your body shell

Nothing will fit

But a decent replacement 1.0 ecoboost engine, that you maintain correctly will still work out cheaper, including having to insure a modified car

Even a Pumaspeed replacement will still be cheaper

Don't let your finance company fob you off with warranty talk.

You have a legal right, providing YOU have kept up with the service schedule, to expect longevity.

Pop to Citizen's Advice and ask them to guide you, or look on Money Saving Expert

If it's a 2014, the wet belt was due for replacement last year, so may have not kept to service schedule.

Also the engine light came on 6 months ago...

DaveT70 I’ve contacted citizen advice and and they told me the same thing but the finance company they want me to take the car to diagnose that the problem was already occurring at the time when I bought the car

It's been more than 6 months, so the burden of proof is on you to prove the issue was present at the time of purchase for them to be liable.

You normally have to pay for an engineer's report, although you can get this back if you successfully claim through Section 75.

Yes Alex999 that a big burden to have for the next 3 years and me spending money on top of the finance for knowing that might not get back to money to pay for an engineer report it’s a gamble so I came to the conclusion to swap everything

It has to be from another Focus of the same age (2011-2014).  Things like engine mounts and dash clocks are all specific to the car body, not just the engine.

I also agree with the others that you should stick with another 1.0 EB like for like though.  I wouldn't even consider doing this conversion myself.

I completely understand that a new 1.0 would be ideal but if I end up spending £2000 on a new engine and in 2 years goes boom again ?

Surely a brand new engine that you have all the service history for is better than an unknown second hand one?

We don't know what information you were given when you bought the car - perhaps you were told that the belt had already been changed. However the fact remains that the belt probably failed because it was not replaced before the recommended maximum interval, and apparently the car was driven for 6 months after the oil light came on.

There is no reason why a brand new engine, given annual oil and filter changes with the correct oil, should fail after 2 years.
