Common change/wear items on the 2.0 Ecoblue/Ecoboost?

Featured Replies

Afternoon All,

Considering replacing our '67 TDCi auto which I've recently sold with a slightly newer one that would fall into the 'Ecoblue' era or possibly a petrol. I'm fairly familiar with the bits that often need changed once you get to c. 100-150k on the TDCi (timing belt, aux belt, sometimes pulley, thermostat housing, DMF etc) and just wondered if there are any similar 'expected' renewals on the '18 on Ecoblue variant/2.0 Ecoboost petrol that it would be good to know about? I'm aiming to find one that's already had the belt done if diesel given that's a bit of a meaty job as I understand it but anything else you might expect to see needing renewed on either of those engines once at 5yrs/100k+?

Many thanks,

Sandy

Does anyone know if the 2.0T petrol option in the Galaxy that I've seen a couple of early 65/16 plates or so sporting is a timing chain rather than a belt?

Cheers.

Yes, 2.0 EcoBoost are chain.

Yes, as Tom says, all 2L Ecoboost (which are all petrol units) have timing chains

Thanks both - I assume the 2.0T in the Galaxy and S-Max is the same unit? What is the reputation of this engine if anyone had any experiences? I can find very few references to petrol ownership experiences so other than petrol usually being easier to live with than diesels and the use of a TC auto rather than dual clutch (?) I'm keen to try and understand whether the petrol could be worth considering despite the extra fuel costs...?

Thanks all.

Yes, same unit in Galaxy & S-Max.  Also used in the Mondeo.  And in the Mk3 Focus ST, albeit slightly modified.  The engine seems generally reliable.  Have seen one or two slack rattly chains at higher mileages.

Fun fact, it was also used in the Range Rover Evoque.

Grand to know, thanks! So out of interest, would folk feel that:

i) the 2.0T petrol/TC auto that comes with it in the c. '15-on shape of the Galaxy (and S-Max?) or

ii) the Ecoblue diesel/TC auto combo from c. '19 on

would be the more dependable combo compared to the '15-'18 diesel/Powershift options or 6/half dozen?

Cheers!

I can't comment on the automatic gearboxes.  I would trust a 2.0 EcoBoost far more than a 2.0 EcoBlue just based on engine alone.

If the later 2L ecoboost petrol also has a torque converter type trans - go for that - I love the powershift but we all know it can give very difficult to sort problems at times, and expensive

If your buying an ecoblue you are better off to take a mechanic with you, make sure it starts instantly from cold even below freezing

6F35's not too brilliant either🤪

Dave, you would probably need a calculator to add up all the manufacturers vehs that have "not too brilliant" transmissions
