Galaxy cranking a couple of times but not starting.

Featured Replies

Hi All

I’ve got a 2013 diesel galaxy auto with 193k which was working quite happily until my wife needed to our little person somewhere and it wouldn’t even turn over. It had started first thing in the morning without issue and multiple times throughout the day but didn’t in the evening. I plugged in the iOS car scanner which showed multiple errors which I assumed were mostly due to the tests not being able to run. It’s coming up with engine malfunction / immobiliser active. The gear select appeared to be locked and the brake pedal depressed. I checked all fuses but all appeared ok. The battery voltage at rest measured 12.2 so I thought it might be the battery finally giving up the ghost (last replaced in 2020) but after putting a new one in the issue didn’t go away. I researched online, tried spare key, banged on top of the dash above the instrument cluster (dry solder joints?) and some how now the immobiliser issue has gone away. The car is now cranking/turning over about twice before it stops with a noise. I can hear the R4 (glow plug?) relay clicking away and other relays behind the instrument cluster / gear selector if that helps.

Note, that the car has been driven through some large road puddles as the roads tend to flood around us so wondering if water has got in somewhere and caused a shortage? My wife did say that after driving through said large puddles the car did stop and restart again.

Recent OBD-II scan shows P0113, P0130(13), P0113(15), P0611(1A), P0563(17), P068A(00).  I told car scanner to not sure archived items as there was a very very long list showing. Is forescan going to be any more help?

Any advice or guidance would be greatly appreciated as if anything major has broken it might be time to scrap it, as this car is turning into a money pit (we’ve been spent about 2k last year getting things fixed to pass the mot).

Open the air box and check the filter isn’t wet

Thanks for the suggestion, it's all dry.

I've just double checked that the new battery is good so suspect the starter motor now as whilst it's turning over, it only does it twice before what sounds like the pinion rattling and coming away from the flywheel which might suggest the solenoid can't hold it in place. I'll pull it out tomorrow and test but I've ordered a 2nd hand one from ebay so we'll see how things go.

I'll let you know how I get on.

I have now fixed the Galaxy and it's starting first time. The 2nd hand starter motor addressed the issue with the turning over and then I traced a blown fuse to the ECM although it still wouldn't start but would turn over quite happily but not fire. Changed the fuel filter, bled the fuel line and hey presto it fired up. Hopefully this might help others if they run into similar issues. I still have a P0130 02 Sensor issue (open circuit) but I need to trace likely a wiring fault for that as the o2 sensor was replaced last year.
